Pack Principles: How we train a reliable recall at Smart Dog Obedience Training.

If you’ve ever wondered how to get your dog to come when called, here’s a look at the method we use with every dog that trains with us at Smart Dog

We focus on five things with every dog:
🦴A consistent cue. One word, used the same way every time, so your dog never has to guess what you mean.
🦴A long line. We build the recall on a 15 to 30 foot lead so the dog gets the feeling of freedom while we still have a way to guide them back. The line doesn’t come off until the recall is strong.
🦴Reinforcement every time. A recall that pays off is a recall a dog wants to repeat. We help owners make coming to them the best part of the dog’s day.
🦴Real-world practice. A recall that only works in the at home isn’t a strong recall. We encourage all our graduates to keep attending Pack Outings in real environments with real distractions, because that’s where reliability is built.
🦴Recall doesn’t end the fun. One of the biggest mistakes we see is owners only calling their dog when it’s time to leave. We do the opposite. Call, reward, release back to play. Coming to you should mean more freedom, not less.

A strong, consistent recall is the secret to off-leash freedom. It’s also one of the hardest things to build on your own, which is exactly why we built our program around developing dogs with strong off leash training.
