This patient presented with a chronic corneal ulcer and was diagnosed with an ectopic cilium.

Ectopic cilia are tiny abnormal hairs that grow from the inside of the eyelid, most often the upper lid, and point toward the cornea. Basically, every blink can feel like a little hair poking the eye.

These sneaky hairs can cause chronic irritation, squinting, tearing, and recurrent or stubborn corneal ulcers that just do not want to heal.

Treatment usually involves surgically removing the problem follicle, often with cryotherapy, a freezing treatment used to help prevent the hair from growing back.

Some dogs also have distichia, which are extra eyelashes growing from the eyelid margin. If those lashes are irritating the eye too, cryotherapy may be used on those follicles as well.

Once the source of irritation is removed, the corneal ulcer can finally finish healing.
