Declan, Dr. Meghan’s kitty, getting special enrichment time outside by his tree.

Declan has cerebellar hypoplasia which is a neurological condition that makes him wobbly, to put it in simple terms. Despite this struggle, he’s an affectionate boy with a big personality, and we hope to see him live a long and fulfilled life.

You may have noticed we haven’t been posting as often recently and that’s because it’s kitten season, which is our busiest time of year!

“Kitten season” refers to when the weather outside gets warmer and many intact (not spayed) female cats go into heat, resulting in litters upon litters of kittens. While this may sound like cuteness overload, it puts more strain on shelters that take those kittens in and leaves less room for other cats in need of care and loving homes.

That’s why we so strongly support spaying and neutering! Kitten season is our busiest time because a large part of our service as a clinic is high-volume spay/neuter which helps to reduce the stray population and therefore the number of animals in shelters. Even for feral/community cats who may not be able to adapt to living indoors, TNR programs (Trap-Neuter-Return) make a huge impact on population control and the cats’ long-term health which can be affected by the physical stress of constant mating/pregnancy and the associated territorial behaviors.

Fun fact: If you see a cat missing their left ear tip, that’s the universal sign they were spayed or neutered through a TNR program!

May is Foster Care Awareness Month for Pets 🐾💙

Every day, foster families open their hearts and homes to animals in need — giving scared, abandoned, and recovering pets a safe place to heal, grow, and feel loved.

Fostering saves lives. It creates space in shelters, helps pets adjust to home life, and gives them a better chance at finding their forever families.

To all the fosters, volunteers, rescues, and adopters: thank you for making a difference, one paw at a time. 🐶🐱

One common misconception we often hear from clients within the veterinary world is that indoor pets don't require routine veterinary care, as they aren't directly exposed to the outdoors; however, staying inside doesn't guarantee immunity to parasites and health risks.

Fleas, ticks, and intestinal parasites can be carried inside through other pets or items brought into the home, including humans' clothing, and all pets can develop dental disease, obesity, and/or health conditions that come with aging. Bringing your pet in for a regular exam and keeping them up to date on vaccines is a simple way to help protect them against serious, infectious diseases and also helps to catch health issues early, saving you stress and money in the long-run.

Why do we recommend Gabapentin and Trazodone for pets that are more apprehensive about the vet?
We at Precision Vet like to provide services in a way that is as low-stress and fear-free for our patients as possible. Stress and anxiety leads to your pet having a negative association with the vet which simply makes it harder on everyone when it's time for a checkup. Gabapentin and Trazodone (Gaba/Traz) are typically the medications we try for anxiety relief related to veterinary visits in pets, and we've found that the two medications work best when given together. Not only do anti-anxiety medications make our job providing veterinary services for your pet easier, it's also beneficial for easing their stress which can have lasting effects on their health. Animals don't understand why we're poking and prodding them, so going to the doctor can be even more dreadful for them than it is for us!
