🎃🐾 Halloween Prep: Desensitizing Your Dog
Halloween can be a LOT for our dogs—strangers at the door, costumes, knocking, decorations, unusual sounds, and people walking around after dark.
Instead of waiting until Halloween night, start preparing now! 👻
🎃 Tips for a Less Stressful Halloween
👻 Introduce costumes gradually
Let your dog see costumes before someone puts one on. Reward calm behavior and slowly increase how much of the costume you wear around them.
🚪 Practice doorbell + knocking
Work on door manners in short sessions. Knock → reward calm behavior → open the door. Gradually increase the excitement and distractions.
🔔 Don’t flood your dog
If your dog is barking, lunging, hiding, or unable to take treats, the situation is too difficult. Increase distance or decrease the intensity.
🎃 Introduce decorations early
Put out one decoration at a time and let your dog investigate at their own pace. Reward calm curiosity.
🍬 Practice around distractions
Use treats, toys, or their mat to teach your dog what you want them to do when something unusual happens.
🏠 Give them an escape plan
Your dog doesn’t have to participate in Halloween! A quiet room, crate, or comfortable space away from the door can be the best option for some dogs.
❤️ Remember:
Desensitization is about gradually changing your dog’s response—not forcing them to “get used to it.”
If your dog is overwhelmed, go back a step. Start where they can succeed and slowly build toward the real-life situation.
🎃 A little preparation now can make Halloween much easier for both you and your dog!
