The breeding flock is settling into their new home nicely! 🐦❤️

I’ll keep them locked into the barn portion for a couple of weeks so they can really get comfortable and learn that this is home. Once they’re completely settled in, I’ll open up their outside run.

They won’t be free-ranging for at least a year, but I want them to know where they belong and, more importantly, that coming back inside is a safe and comfortable place. Hopefully, this will make the transition to their run nice and easy—and save me from chasing Guineas all over the farm later! 😂

This particular project started months ago with a brand-new cement floor. I about killed myself painting it—my shoulder may never be the same! 😂

But it’s FINALLY finished and in use with next year’s Guinea Fowl breeding flock! 🐦

I couldn’t be happier with how well it turned out. It was a lot of work, but seeing the flock settled in and enjoying their new home makes every aching muscle worth it. ❤️

I check on the duckweed every single day to see how it’s doing, and today I spotted what I first thought were more bugs. When I looked closer, I realized they’re not bugs at all—they’re teeny tiny polliwogs!

I think every single frog or toad egg in the pond must have hatched. There are literally billions of them! It’s amazing to see the pond coming to life more and more every day. Nature never stops amazing me.🥰🐸

A few months ago, my brother came out with his excavator and completely transformed my neglected pond. It was overgrown, filling in, and nowhere near living up to its potential.

Since then, it’s been a lot of experimenting, learning, and letting nature do what it does best.

I’ve added beneficial bacteria, introduced feeder goldfish, started growing duckweed in my lower pond to eventually provide natural feed for my ducks and chickens, and, hardest of all, kept my ducks out of the main pond so the duckweed could establish itself. (That has definitely tested my patience!)

The most exciting part is watching the wildlife respond. Dragonflies are everywhere, toads have moved in, and tonight I watched bats swooping over the ponds catching insects. Every new species that chooses to call the farm home feels like another sign that the ecosystem is coming together.

There’s still plenty to do, but it’s incredibly rewarding to see this little habitat becoming healthier every week. I can’t wait to see what it looks like by the end of the summer.

So excited to see bats out hunting bugs around the farm! 🦇 They do such an amazing job with natural insect control, and I’m thrilled they’re making themselves at home here.

Now I just need to figure out the best place to put up a bat house for them!

One thing I’ve learned this year is to interrupt broodiness in my breeding hens right away. A long period of broodiness completely disrupted the flock dynamics. Even though these hens were raised together, they now fight to the point of injury whenever they’re together.

Rather than continue to risk injury, I’ve decided to keep them separate for the rest of this breeding season. I’ll simply put my tom in with the isolated hen for a few hours each day to keep her fertile and continue collecting hatching eggs.

Next year, after I select my keeper tom, I’ll try integrating this hen into my second breeding flock instead. Raising heritage breeds is always a learning experience, and every season teaches me something new. Hopefully, this lesson helps another breeder avoid the same situation!

Nothing makes me happier than hearing how well birds from my breeding program are doing!

I received this wonderful message from a customer who purchased Midget White turkey poults from me this spring:

“The poults we purchased from this flock took First and Second in Breeding Toms and First and Third in Breeding Hens at the Nevada Agricultural Fair this weekend!”

I couldn’t be more proud of these beautiful birds and the care they’ve received. Congratulations on such an incredible accomplishment!

Thank you, Heidi, for giving them such a great home and for showcasing the quality of these amazing little turkeys. 🦃🏆❤️
