Congratulations to Yeti, the Great Pyrenees, and Woody, the Hound mix, for completing our Behavior Modification Training Course! ❤️🐾

Yeti had a rough start in life. She was found as a stray, underweight, and dealing with a skin condition, allergies, and an ear infection. Today, she’s as healthy as she can be and absolutely rocked her training!

The family originally planned to work with just Yeti, but Woody loved every second of training, too, so now they have TWO smart pups showing off their skills! 😂❤️

Door manners were the biggest priority for the family, but both dogs also worked on sit, down, stay, leave it, loose leash walking, and recall.

So proud of these two and love seeing how far they’ve come! 🐾

Poor sweet Ruby. ❤️ She’s started developing a condition that’s causing her paws to turn inward. Unfortunately, nobody knows for sure exactly what’s going on with her yet, but her orthopedic specialist suspects it may be carpal tendon laxity.

For now, we’re working on physical therapy with her to help improve her balance and build and maintain her muscle strength. ❤️

I’ve known this sweet girl and her mama for years, and they are both absolutely wonderful. 🥹❤️

I wanted to share this, not to bash the owner, but to point out what’s being missed here. I’m sure they made this video thinking it was cute, but the dog is showing signs of being uncomfortable with what’s going on.

I think a lot of times, it’s not that owners don’t care about their dogs being uncomfortable but that they don’t recognize the signs they’re seeing. Small dogs especially tend to get overlooked because their behavior is often brushed off as “cute”. I have seen small dogs growling and biting called adorable, it’s infuriating.

Dachshunds naturally have those big puppy eyes, so you can’t always go by their eyes alone. This is why it’s SO important to look at the rest of their body language, too. (This is for any breed as well!) This little guy’s body is extremely stiff, and they’re lip licking as well. These are signs of discomfort, especially with a human being so close to their treat. The dog is communicating that they’re uncomfortable with this interaction and need some space. If this communication continues to be ignored, this dog can escalate to growling, snapping or even biting.

This is exactly why learning your dog’s body language is SO important. Our dogs are constantly communicating with us, but if we don’t know what to look for, we can easily miss what they’re trying to tell us.

When we’re making cute videos of our dogs for views, we need to make sure our dogs are actually enjoying what’s happening, too. But this goes beyond videos. It applies to everyday life, too!

🚫 Why we don’t use slip leads (unless it’s a true emergency).

Let’s be honest about slip leads. They tighten around a dog’s neck when tension is applied. That is how they’re designed to work. They tighten, put pressure on the neck, and rely on that pressure to control the dog. So a a slip lead is essentially a noose. And I know that sounds bad, but that’s exactly why we have a problem with them.

Every time a dog pulls, the loop tightens. That pressure can cause pain, it restricts breathing, and damage the delicate structures in the neck. It can also cause a dog to panic, fight against the leash, or become even more stressed on walks.

I know someone will say “But mine has a stopper!”

Okay, but a stopper doesn’t magically make it safe. It might prevent the loop from closing completely and strangling your dog , but the pressure is still going directly onto your dog’s neck.

We understand that slip leads can be useful in certain emergency situations, like quickly securing a loose dog with no collar. But there’s a difference between using one briefly when you need to get a dog to safety and choosing one for everyday walks or training.

Your dog shouldn’t have to experience pain or struggle to breathe just to learn how to walk on a leash. This is not okay.

A harness is the safest option. For powerful dogs or dogs that pull you can use a dual leash system that attaches to front and back clip of the harness on the dog.

Let’s see those HAPPY faces! 🐶❤️

We want to see pictures of your dogs’ happy faces while working with you! Drop a picture of your pup enjoying training in the comments!

Our dogs shouldn’t have to live in fear to listen to us. We want them to feel safe enough to try, make mistakes, learn, and have fun doing it! 👏

Some people dread Halloween because their dog barks every single time someone knocks on the door or rings the doorbell. 😅

But you can actually turn Halloween night into a really great training opportunity!

Put a little sign on your door letting trick-or-treaters know you’re working on training with your dog and asking them to give you a minute. You might even offer an extra piece of candy or two for their patience. 😉

Use those knocks and doorbells to practice things like going to a mat or simply learning that someone at the door doesn’t mean they have to lose their minds.

BUT… if Halloween is just too much for your dog, that’s okay too! ❤️

Set up a safe, quiet space in the back of the house, turn on a noise machine or some music to help drown out the Halloween noise, and give them a long-lasting enrichment activity to work on.

And if you’re able to stay near the front door and avoid the doorbell and knocking altogether, even better!

There is no one “right” way to do Halloween with your dog.

Training when they’re able to handle it is great. Management and giving them space when they’re overwhelmed is also great.

Whatever works best for YOU and YOUR dog is the best choice. ❤️

We hear all the time that people don’t buy their dogs toys anymore because they just tear them up.

Thats the worst reason to take toys away from them.

Your dog tears the toy up because… that’s the point!

Not every dog enjoys destroying their toys, but for the dogs that do, ripping, shredding, pulling, dissecting and pulling the stuffing out is natural and enjoyable way for them to play.

Dogs are wired to chew, tear, rip, shake and investigate things with their mouths. Letting them do that with an appropriate toy gives them an outlet for those natural behaviors. It can be mentally enriching and satisfying.

Instead of thinking, “My dog destroys everything,” think, “My dog really enjoys shredding things. How can I give them something appropriate to shred?”

And yes, we still need to teach them what they CAN’T destroy.

If your dog starts testing the couch, your kids’ stuffed animals, your shoes, etc., just redirect them to something they are allowed to have. Management matters too. Don’t leave tempting things laying around and expect your dog to make the right choice every time.

Give them appropriate outlets AND teach them what’s off limits. We can do both! 👍

Check out local thrift stores for cheap stuffed animals, or look for clearance stuffies. Just make sure there aren’t batteries, hard plastic parts, or anything else that could be dangerous if swallowed.

Also, a head of lettuce is a great option for some dogs! Especially for dogs that like to ingest as this is a safe option, but even if they don’t, it’s can still be so fun for them!!

A dog destroying their toy isn’t a behavior problem.

They’re just good at being a dog.
