If you see me and my eyes look watery or my face is red and puffy, I had to say goodbye to one of my best buddies yesterday. Hardest decision I’ve ever had to make… I know every single one of you know that dogs love like no other. There is nothing like it. I’ll miss this little guy more than I can express. Till we meet again, my sweet Oliver. Mama loves you. 💔

Most people don’t really realize what goes into dog grooming. There is so much. I always appreciate my customers and how much the care about me. 🩷 Thank you. 🩷

Dog grooming has changed a lot over the years — and not because groomers suddenly decided to raise prices.

Back in the 1990s, the average full groom was about $40–$50.
If prices had increased just $2 per year since then (like most skilled trades), that same groom would be around $117 today for a small dog weighing 0-15 pounds.

For many years, grooming stayed underpriced while:
• supply costs increased
• insurance increased
• utilities increased
• rent increased
• groomer pay increased
• and the popularity of high-maintenance coats (like doodles) dramatically increased the time required per dog

Most full grooms require 2.5–3.5 hours of hands-on work from a trained professional.

Dog grooming is also one of the most physically demanding careers people don’t often think about.

It’s a female-dominated trade that involves:

• standing 6–8 hours per day
• repetitive wrist and shoulder strain
• lifting large dogs
• breathing hair and dander daily
• working around urine and f***s
• handling nervous or biting dogs
• and continuing to provide calm, compassionate care through it all

Many groomers develop long-term back, shoulder, and respiratory issues over time.

At Zen Dog Grooming, our small-dog haircuts currently start at $90 in 2026 which is still below what grooming would average today if pricing had followed steady increases over the last 30+ years.

We truly love what we do, and we appreciate every client who supports professional grooming and our small business.

These things always break my heart…

UPDATE-ADOPTED

Kennel depression is starting to set in for Loki 😭. Our ray of sunshine. Our constant butt wiggling pick-me-up.

From what we’ve pieced together, Loki’s owner passed away and a family member allegedly rehomed him, but he was found running loose shortly after. We suspect he was dumped, but have no proof. This was 241 days ago.

Loki is a larger dog, weighing 65 pounds, but definitely still lap dog material.

He is OBSESSED with toys, specifically tennis balls, and will happily spend his days chilling in his bed, performing squeaker-ectomies.

We could see Loki living with kids or other dogs. He’s so friendly and full of life and he just needs to belong to someone.

He can jump a six foot fence if he’s feeling up to it, so just don’t leave him outside unattended, but he doesn’t try when you’re out with him.

Loki is a wonderful dog. We mean it. He’s the apple of our eye. If you’d like to add him to your family, please let us know!

Every year is hard, but I dedicate each year to the friends I lost and will never forget. 2025 was hard with a few very unexpected passings of some of these precious friends. Each dog takes a piece of my heart with them. Until we meet again… 🥹❤️
