“I’ve never seen this stuff a day in my life”. That’s what it seems like a dog is saying when the same food that they eat every day is presented in training. This pitfall can keep you having to raise the value of what they’re willing to work for during your sessions. While that may not seem like a big deal now, when you need to raise the value because you’re out in public, you’ve already set the bar at Filet Mignon at home. Stormy went from me barely being able to pet her to say “good job” to besties after learning some clear communication skills.

When you take your dog out for a walk, do they ever give you the idea that it’s beneficial for them to check in with you? If not, chances are high that there are some other areas where they couldn’t care less about what you think. Sure, you’d love to maybe reward them with a treat when they do something that you like, but if they haven’t learned how to get rewarded, you’re just the person at the end of the leash keeping them from all of the stuff they wanna get to.
