The keyword is “sometimes” 🤔

This wasn’t in the job description 😅

Seriously though, people only see the fun part. The real work happens behind the scenes; waking up before the sun- the endless hours spent saying “go potty”, cleaning crates, picking up p**p, giving baths, mopping floors, going on walks, etc.. A lot of work goes into not just training dogs but caring for them as well. But I’m so blessed that this is what my life looks like and I wouldn’t trade it for the world. Thank you to all my clients that give me the ability to live this life, your pup is in good hands 💙😌

I promise we’ve practiced this before 😅

When I first taught Drax the word “Reviere” it meant to go find the guy and bark (oops). So no matter how many times we’ve tried to teach him it now means “go around these empty blinds even though you know damn well the guy is in the last one”, (and trust me we’ve tried MANY times) he doesn’t buy it. 😅

So now leading up to a trial we just load each blind with a helper, so in the competition he thinks, “maybe there’s a guy in here I can bite”. 👹

To people who don’t know, it just looks like he has no idea what he’s doing. 🤪

For the people who’ve been involved in the process (also many) they know he knows EXACTLY what he’s doing and the only reason he’s running around these stupid things is the off chance he can have some fun. 😂

This dog is too smart for his own good (and mine) 😅

Teach your dog fetch IQ level 5000 🤯

Step 1) get 2 balls 🎾

Step 2) throw one ball

Step 3) call their name and while they’re on their way back show them the second one

Step 4) when they drop the first one throw the second one

Step 5) repeat step 1-4

Your dog decides how the walk will go before you leave the house 🏠

Your dog is ramping up the moment they see you grab the leash. They start jumping, barking, spinning in circles, but walks should be a calm and enjoyable experience for everyone, not one filled with frantic energy, pulling, and barking at other dogs and people.

If your walk starts with chaos, it’s going to end in chaos too. Change your ritual, take a second before rushing out the door. Get the leash on and wait til they calm down. Then before you leave the house, put them in a sit and create the expectation of CONTROL.

Show your dog you have expectations of how they behave and act. Show them that a calm and attentive mindset is ultimately what gives them what they want.

Change the ritual and be CONSISTENT. This mindset has been created over months or even years, it’s not going to completely change in 2 walks. Fix the mindset, and you change the behavior 😌

This is NOT what playing looks like ⚠️

Many people look at this scene and think “it’s just a couple dogs playing rough”👹and many years ago before I studied dog psychology and communication for a living I would’ve probably thought the same thing. After all, neither of them are yelping or acting hurt, they keep engaging, and none of them are actually biting the other or causing pain right?

We as people often are looking for these big obvious verbal signs or exaggerated physical responses but are missing the subtle cues and words painted from their expressions. 🎨

Dogs are nonverbal communicators and ”speak” almost exclusively through their body language and gestures. So as dog owners it’s important we learn their language, to properly understand them.

What you see here is NOT 2 dogs having fun. One dog is overly aroused and trying to assert dominance over the other, while the other is desperately trying to avoid conflict without appearing weak and becoming a punching bag. 🥊

Dogs often try to establish hierarchy over others, especially when in a group dynamic. The whole “dominance theory has been debunked” argument is regularly laid to rest when you observe dogs behaving in this manner. If you see your dog engaging in a similar manner as either of these dogs, calmly remove them from the situation. Either inappropriate and dominant behaviors will be inadvertently encouraged and become stronger, or your dogs confidence can be shot and they can develop strong anxious or aggressive behaviors 😥

Appropriate play involves loose body language, slow relaxed tail wags, play bows, and a general respect for personal space and boundaries. 😌 Start paying attention to these subtle cues and you will see your dog in a whole new light💡
