Some stories stay with you. Some stories make you angry. And some stories make you wonder how anyone could look at a helpless animal and walk away.
Marcel is all of those stories.
Marcel was on the CODE RED list at ACCT Philly because he couldn't walk. He was found underneath a bridge with maggots in his tail pocket. MAGGOTS. Couldn't stop thinking about that image and what this poor boy must have endured.
But when we got him to the vet, we learned that the horror went even deeper.
Marcel had been sitting in his own urine and f***s for so long that his skin was severely scalded. And on the backs of his hind legs, where you would expect calluses or sores from dragging himself around, he has LITERAL HOLES caused by the pressure of sitting in one position.
HOLES. 💔
Let that sink in for a minute.
We don't know exactly what happened to Marcel before he was found. We may never know how he lost the use of his back legs or how long he was left to suffer. But we do know that he deserved SO much better than this.
Marcel underwent an emergency MRI to determine whether surgery might give him a chance to walk again. Sadly, surgery is not an option, and we have been told that Marcel will never walk again.
We are still waiting for his cerebral spinal fluid results to help determine whether we are dealing with meningitis or a traumatic spinal cord injury.
So where does that leave Marcel?
It leaves him with US. ❤️
And we are going to do everything we can to make sure the rest of his life looks nothing like his past.
Yes, Marcel is a diaper dog. Yes, he has no control over his bowels. He will need a special routine, patience, and someone willing to embrace the extra care that comes with a special-needs dog.
But you know what else Marcel is?
A dog who deserves to be loved. A dog who deserves comfort. A dog who deserves a soft place to sleep, a full belly, gentle hands, and a family who sees HIM instead of his disabilities.
Once he settles into a diaper and wheelchair routine, we believe Marcel can bring an incredible amount of happiness to the person willing to give him a chance. His disability does not define his worth, and it certainly does not make him any less deserving of a forever home.
We cannot change what happened to Marcel. We cannot give him back the ability to walk. But we CAN change what the rest of his life looks like.

The emergency MRI was costly, and while it unfortunately ruled out surgery, it was a necessary step in understanding Marcel's condition and determining how best to care for him. His medical journey is far from over, and every donation helps us continue to provide the care he needs.
