Sweet Bronte and Billie are the last two sisters still waiting for their happily ever after. ❤️

Back in October, we received an urgent plea to help this little family. Their owners had far too many dogs on the property, none fixed, and simply couldn’t afford to care for or feed them all. These babies were only about 2 months old when we got them — tiny, frail, loaded with parasites, and literally withering away.

Thanks to an incredible foster who stepped up without hesitation, they finally got the chance they deserved. Over the next few months, she poured love, care, groceries, meds, and countless hours into getting them healthy and strong. And wow… what a transformation.

When they finally made their way to NY, we honestly expected them to grow much bigger, but these girls stayed perfectly petite. We think they’ll top out around 20–25 lbs full grown — the perfect compact cuddle size. 🥹

Their siblings have all found amazing homes already, and every single family says the same thing: these pups are absolute gems. Sweet, loving, goofy, and just the best little companions.

Now it’s Bronte and Billie’s turn. Let’s find these adorable girls the forever families they’ve been waiting so patiently for. 🐾💕

🚨 Lt. Dan update 🚨

Lt. Dan (formerly Teddy) saw Dr. Baggs yesterday for his orthopedic consult and follow-up. ❤️‍🩹🐾

He was sedated for new x-rays and a splint change, and for now we got the news we were hoping for: we are not currently looking at major surgery in the immediate future. 🙏

At this point, the plan is more of a “let’s carefully manage this and see how his little leg responds” situation. The goal is to help everything set as well as possible while he grows.

The downside? This will require weekly orthopedic visits for the next 6 weeks — including sedation, two x-ray films each visit, and splint changes every single time. As you can imagine, that adds up very quickly.

The doctors do not think his foot will ever be perfectly straight, but they do believe it’s something he can comfortably live and function with, which is a huge win for this little guy. ❤️

We were really counting on the pledges offered on Lt. Dan’s euthanasia deadline post to help carry us through these first few weeks of treatment. Unfortunately, less than half of those pledges have actually come through so far. Rescue doesn’t stop when the freedom ride ends — that’s when the real medical and rehabilitation journey begins.

If you’d like to help Lt. Dan continue getting the care he needs, even a few dollars truly makes a difference when hundreds of people come together. Donations are tax deductible and can be made either through our website at www.barking-back.org (fastest option for immediate care) or through our GoFundMe linked in the comments. ❤️🐾

For now though, Lt. Dan remains blissfully unaware of all of this and is still operating at approximately 472% puppy energy. Keeping him calm and off that leg may actually become our greatest medical challenge according to his deeply disgruntled furry foster siblings. 😂

STAY TUNED for more updates. For now Enjoy these photos and videos of Lt. Dan post-sedation, where he briefly left this dimension and returned with absolutely zero idea what was going on. 🤣 Between the floppy head, delayed blinking, and his very serious attempts to stay awake, this tiny dude looked like he partied a little too hard at spring break. We’re not saying the lights were on and nobody was home… but the loading circle was definitely spinning for awhile. 😂🐾

🚨 Lieutenant Dan (fka Teddy) update 🚨

Yesterday, thanks to an amazing chain of volunteers, Lt. Dan made his way from one incredible foster family to another to get ready for his orthopedic appointment today. ❤️🐾

Within approximately 3.7 seconds of arriving, he had already made himself completely at home — inspecting the cat, reorganizing the toy basket, and annoying his scruffy senior foster brothers like it was a full-time job. 😂 (Videos evidence in the comments)

Which brings us to our current problem: keeping this adorable menace still long enough to heal that leg may actually be impossible.

Today we’re hoping for good news, a solid treatment plan, and the chance to give this little guy the future he almost never got. 🤞❤️‍🩹

Want to help Lt. Dan on his road to recovery? ❤️ Donations can be made through our website at www.barking-back.org (available immediately), or through the linked GoFundMe now that it's live and posted after much rescue chaos and puppy wrangling. 🐾😂

He also has his own wishlist https://a.co/0f8DOqps

Please keep our tiny freedom rider in your thoughts today. 🐶

*** FREEDOM RIDE FOR LT. DAN (fka Teddy) 💙🐾 ***

Just 24 hours ago, this sweet 6-month-old puppy was sitting in a shelter, facing euthanasia.
Today? Lieutenant Dan officially walked -- well, hobbled -- out those doors and into his second chance. 🥹

He was neutered this morning and sprung from the shelter shortly after by the amazing Tom Anderson — tail wagging, smiling, and soaking up every bit of freedom like he knew his life had just changed.

For the next day or two, Lt. Dan will be hanging out at Camp Butler with Sinatra’s amazing foster parents while he waits for his flight to his longer-term foster, Deedra, where his next chapter truly begins. ❤️

And even bigger news:
He already has an appointment scheduled Friday with an orthopedic surgeon so we can finally get answers and determine the best path forward for him. Right now, we know there’s a significant difference in cost between attempting surgical repair versus amputation, but one thing is certain — we will always do everything we can to give this boy the absolute best outcome possible and the happiest life ahead.

For anyone who would like to help Lieutenant Dan on his journey, every bit of support truly gives us more ability to pursue the care and options that could make the biggest difference for him. 💙

For now, we’re just celebrating the fact that he’s SAFE.
No more countdown. No more shelter kennel. No more being overlooked.

Welcome to the start of your new life, Lieutenant Dan. ❤️

*** Only 6 months old, set for euthanasia tomorrow 5/18/2026 ***

Well… that fleeting moment of fresh air after 14 years of rescue was starting to feel pretty nice.

But damn you FB algorithm for knowing me far too well… because there was absolutely no way I was scrolling past this face.

Meet Teddy — hereinafter affectionately known as LT. Dan. A broken little puppy with a huge smile, ears that can hear from space, and a deadline none of us could ignore.

This darling little boy was set to be euthanized tomorrow unless a rescue stepped in before 11 a.m.

What we are told is that LT. Dan excitedly jumped from his foster’s arms and suffered devastating injuries to his front paw. X-rays confirmed fractures to metacarpals 2, 3, 4, and 5. He is currently splinted and on pain medication, but he urgently needs orthopedic care the shelter cannot provide.

Right now, we simply don’t know what the best option will be. It may be repair, it may be amputation — and there’s a very significant cost difference between the two. Until he sees a surgeon, we just won’t have those answers, it will all depend on prognosis.

The good news is dogs are resilient as hell. Whether LT. Dan keeps his leg or eventually joins the tri-paw club, what matters most is that he now has a chance.

So yes… our rescue pull break is officially over for this little guy at least ;P

Welcome to Barking Back Rescue, LT. Dan.

I’m a pretty private person, but I've waited too long to ask for help.

I’ve been dealing with some ongoing health issues that I can’t ignore any longer, and I need a couple of weeks to focus on appointments and honestly getting some much-needed downtime.

For 14 years, I’ve been nonstop with rescue. We’ve already paused intake, but we still have dogs who really deserve great homes—and right now, I need a mental and physical reset so I can continue doing right by them.

I’m asking for short-term fosters. Even just 2 weeks would make a huge difference. Giving these dogs a more individualized attention will truly help them move forward, and it will give me the space to take care of my health.

We can provide all supplies and support needed—you just provide a safe place to land. Looking for fosters in a 2 to 3hr drive of Middletown NY (unless you're one of our long term people who live further, we would make an exception)

If you can help, please message us or apply here: www.barking-back.org
Please share—this really matters right now.
