Hard to believe it's been a year since we lost Amber to intestinal Lymphoma. These fall walks in the woods just aren't the same without her! When I saw these photos pop up, I just had to share. She was precious. Kind of a disaster, but precious.

In addition to treating wildlife, our Center also participates in dozens of research projects. One of the major studies we participated in for the past decade was focused on treating mange in Black Bears, and we wanted to share what we learned.

Between 2016 and 2023, our Center collaborated with staff from the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources and the Southeastern Cooperative Wildlife Disease Study to evaluate the effectiveness of medications used to treat sarcoptic mange in Black Bears. A total of 14 mange-afflicted bears were treated at the Center during that time - and prior to release, staff confirmed that each one had successfully cleared the mites with treatment. Four of the bears were collared with GPS tracking units so they could be monitored after release.

Unfortunately, while the medication successfully eliminated the mites during treatment, three of the bears experienced a recurrence of mange after being released. All three developed such significant mange within 22 months that they had to be humanely euthanized. The fourth died due to unknown circumstances - it had no obvious signs of mange, but mange could not be ruled out.

Though this is a small sample size and further study is needed, the results suggest that Black Bears are vulnerable to reinfestation if released into enviornments with mange present and do not develop lasting immunity following treatment. While the results are disappointing, it is important data and with continued partnerships and research, we hope that an effective, long-term treatment option can be found.

I won't say I "take off work" because I actually work incredibly hard - but every Feb I pause my business and run the Girl Scout cookie program for my two troops.

Managing the cookie program - if you really make the most of it - is a whole lot of work. But it will (hopefully) fully fund my troops, so no family has to worry about affording it. Inclusivity matters.

And it's work I was born to do: running a product-based business while teaching you g entrepreneurs business lessons!

Managing inventory and budget, selling, marketing, and coordinating schedules - just a few of the roles I take on. Every weekend we coordinate 8 cookie booths are coordinating 8-9 cookie booths.

It's worth it because I get to see my older girl scouts honing their business skills. And I see their pride when they hit or exceed their goals.

The kindergarten/ 1st grade girls are slowly building confidence as they interact with customers at cookie booths - and my (formerly shy) youngest daughter has surprised me with how outgoing she's become!

THIS is why girl scouts sell cookies. This, and funding their troops.

** PS: Don't believe the Internet rumors. No money from cookie sales pays executive salaries. It all stays in our local region, except for the $2.50 that goes to the cookie bakers.

My troops earn between $1.15-$1.30 a box, and the rest goes to the regional unit to help with the costs of badge programs, summer camp, staffing the local roles, and providing scholarships for summer camp.

Our tips include:
🔹 Provide outdoor shelters for community cats.
🔹Insulate shelters with STRAW, not hay or blankets that absorb moisture.
🔹 Elevate shelters off the ground, place them in an area with some coverage, and face the entry away from the wind. Weigh them down if storms are expected!
🔹Feed cats extra wet food, which is easy to digest and helps them conserve energy.
🔹Use food and water dishes that will prevent freezing, like heated bowls or deep, wide plastic or ceramic dishes.
🔹When possible and safe, check the cats’ water to ensure they always have an unfrozen source.
🔹 Don’t use salt, chemical melting products, or antifreeze. They can be lethal if licked off paws! Animal-safe deicers are available.
