Today, I said one of the hardest goodbyes of my life.
After more than 14 wonderful years together, my beloved Barkley was peacefully laid to rest at 10:15 this morning.
Barkley’s story began when he was just five months old. He was scheduled to be euthanized, but we couldn’t let his young life end before it had really begun. We rescued him and gave him a second chance.
Little did I know that the dog we saved that day would become one of the greatest blessings of our life.
Barkley grew to become much more than a family pet. He was our best friend, our trusted partner, and our number one demonstration dog at Larry Benoit Dog Trainer LLC.
For years, he stood faithfully beside us, helping teach countless families how to communicate with and train their dogs. Many of you watched him demonstrate obedience, patience, discipline, and the incredible bond between a dog and his handler.
Sometimes, Barkley could teach in a few seconds what would take me several minutes to explain.
He wasn’t just part of my training program. He was part of what made it special.
But Barkley’s life wasn’t without challenges. He endured two TPLO knee surgeries, major stomach surgery, removal of his spleen, and a spider bite that nearly took his life.
Through every hardship, he showed remarkable strength and determination. He was a fighter, and we faced every battle together.
Several months ago, his declining health forced me to retire him from the work he had performed so faithfully. He had earned his rest, but watching my once-strong partner grow weaker was heartbreaking.
As kidney disease took its toll, his body eventually reached a point where it could no longer keep fighting.
This morning, I watched my old friend struggle to take just a few steps before collapsing. It was then I knew we had to make the most difficult decision of all.
For more than 14 years, Barkley trusted us to protect him. Today, I had to honor that trust by giving him peace.
To my beloved Barkley:
I rescued you when you were just a puppy, never imagining the extraordinary journey we would share.
You became my partner, my teacher, my companion, and my friend. You helped me change the lives of other dogs and their families, and you gave me a lifetime of memories I’ll cherish forever.
I wish we could have had one more walk, one more demonstration, one more day together.
But I know how tired your body had become.
We gave you a second chance at life, Barkley, and you gave us more than 14 years of unconditional love.
To everyone who knew Barkley through our training classes, thank you for being part of his life. His legacy will forever remain a part of Larry Benoit Dog Trainer LLC.
