🦷 What Actually Happens During an Equine Dental Exam? 🐴

Ever wonder what your veterinarian is looking for during your horse's dental examination?

A thorough dental exam allows us to evaluate the condition of your horse’s teeth and identify abnormalities that may not be visible during a quick look inside the mouth.

During a dental appointment, we may evaluate for:

🦷 Sharp enamel points
🦷 Hooks and ramps
🦼 Uneven or abnormal tooth wear
🦷 Loose or damaged teeth
🦷 Retained caps or other developmental concerns
🦷 Missing or displaced teeth
🦷 Signs of disease or other oral problems

Depending on your horse's individual needs, dental work may then be performed to address abnormalities and help maintain a healthy, comfortable mouth.

Dental care isn't just about floating teeth—it's about maintaining your horse's overall oral health.

🦷 Your Horse May Have a Dental Problem Without Showing Obvious Signs! 🐴

One of the tricky things about equine dental disease is that horses don't always make it obvious when something is bothering them.

As prey animals, horses are very good at hiding discomfort. A horse can continue eating and acting normally while still experiencing dental pain or developing dental abnormalities.

That's why routine dental examinations are so important.

Keep an eye out for subtle changes such as:

🔹 Eating more slowly than usual
🔹 Chewing differently
🔹 Dropping feed or hay
🔹 Head tossing or bit resistance
🔹 Changes in performance
🔹 Weight loss or difficulty maintaining weight
🔹 Swelling around the face or jaw
🔹 Bad breath

Don't wait until your horse stops eating to think about their teeth!

Regular dental care helps us identify potential problems early and keep your horse comfortable, eating well, and performing their best. 🐎❤️

🦷 Why Does Your Horse Need Routine Dental Care? 🐴

Did you know that your horse’s teeth continue to change throughout their lifetime?

Horses are designed to spend much of their day grazing and chewing, which naturally wears down their teeth. However, uneven wear can lead to sharp points, hooks, waves, and other dental abnormalities that can make eating uncomfortable.

Regular dental examinations allow us to identify problems early—before they become painful or affect your horse’s ability to eat properly.

Some signs that your horse may need a dental check include:

🐎 Dropping partially chewed hay or grain
🐎 Difficulty chewing
🐎 Quidding (making balls of partially chewed hay)
🐎 Weight loss or difficulty maintaining weight
🐎 Excessive drooling
🐎 Resistance while riding or difficulty accepting the bit
🐎 Foul odor from the mouth

Even if your horse seems perfectly healthy, annual dental care is an important part of preventive and routine health care.

🍁 **Fall Is Around the Corner—Is Your Horse Ready?** 🐴

As the seasons begin to change, it's the perfect time to make sure your horse is protected before heading into fall. Cooler temperatures don't mean disease risks disappear, and staying current on vaccinations is one of the best ways to keep your horse healthy.

🍂 **Fall Health Tips:**
✅ Schedule your horse's fall wellness exam and vaccinations early.
✅ Review your horse's vaccination program based on travel, boarding, shows, and exposure risks.
✅ If your horse **missed their spring Potomac Horse Fever (PHF) vaccine**, now is an excellent time to vaccinate. We commonly see **PHF cases later in the summer and into early fall**, so protection is especially important this time of year.
✅ Ask about f***l testing and deworming recommendations to help maintain your horse's overall health.
✅ Stock up on any medications or supplements your horse may need before the busy fall season.

📅 Fall appointments fill quickly, so don't wait until the last minute! Call Cross River Veterinary Service today to schedule your horse's fall wellness visit and vaccinations.
