The Atlanta Weimaraner Club Rescue (“AWCR”) is a registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization of Weimaraner enthusiasts and owners in the Atlanta area. Our Mission:

To rescue, nurture and connect abandoned Weimaraners with forever homes

… one gray dog at a time

AWCR provides Weimaraner owners with a place to meet others that enjoy doing things with their Weimaraners. In addition to the social aspect of the club, the Atlanta Weimaraner Club provides for the rescue, care, and adoption of lost, surrendered and homeless Weimaraners. The AWCR assists in re-homing Weimaraners by providing foster homes. The funds for the rescue program are raised through various fundraising events and donations. The Club also provides public education on the breed and responsible dog ownership. Our rescue program is run strictly on a volunteer basis and supported through fundraising and private donations. We do not have kennel facilities nor do we receive financial help from the government. Please join this group of dedicated individuals who are the true heart of the organization by becoming a member and helping raise funds to rescue our gray friends. We have a dynamic group that has come together to dedicate time and focus on rescuing dogs through friendship, fun and fellowship!

Pablo is on the road!!!

As you may remember, Pablo's flight was cancelled last Friday due to bad weather, but tomorrow he is going to finally make his way to Atlanta thanks to some amazing volunteers...
..and we could not be more grateful for the incredible community that stepped up to make it happen.
After the heartbreaking setback of a grounded flight, our sweet 11.5-year-old Weimaraner is finally back on the move. When logistics fall through, it truly takes a dedicated village to keep a senior rescue dog moving toward safety, and this team proved exactly how powerful that network can be.
Tomorrow morning, Pablo will begin his ground journey from the shelter in Manchester, Tennessee, making his way down to Georgia. From the coordinators completely rearranging the travel schedule to the drivers stepping up for each leg of the trip, every single volunteer has shown incredible dedication.
The next stop will be getting this wonderful senior safely settled, looked after by the veterinary team, and surrounded by the comfort he deserves. Thank you to everyone who shared his story, offered a ride, and refused to let bad weather stand in the way of his freedom ride. Stay tuned for updates as he officially completes his journey to safety.

Welcome to the first chapter of Pablo’s new life. At 11.5 years old, this sweet boy will officially leave the loud, stressful concrete floors of a Tennessee shelter behind, but his true journey to safety is just getting underway. For a senior dog who has likely seen a lot of miles, the transition to a beloved family member takes coordination, patience, and a dedicated network of hands.

An old dog’s heart is incredibly resilient, but it takes an entire community to rebuild the world around them. Pablo’s journey is proof that when a village comes together, a dog’s golden years can truly become his best yet.

AND with that……..PABLO IS airborne tomorrow morning (Friday, 10/16/26)! ✈️🐾
We always say it takes a village to save a shelter dog, and tomorrow, that village has wings! We are incredibly grateful to Pilot Abby for stepping up and offering to fly our sweet 11.5-year-old senior gentleman, Pablo, to the next step of his journey. Instead of a long, stressful day of highway traffic and multiple car transfers, Pablo is getting a first-class, smooth ride straight to safety thanks to Abby’s incredible generosity. An 11.5-year-old boy deserves nothing less than the royal treatment! Please join us in wishing Abby and Pablo clear skies and tailwinds.

Thank you, Abby, for being a vital part of Pablo's rescue network and for helping us bring this sweet boy home! ❤️🌟 And a special thanks to John and Alexis McCord for meeting Pablo’s flight and bring him to the next step in his journey.

We are so incredibly relieved to let you know that Tanner made a total recovery after his emergency vet visit last Sunday! That was a very stressful ordeal. Tanner is now well enough to begin his heartworm treatment, starting tomorrow. It is so tough watching them go through those deep muscle injections, and the strict crate rest is a massive challenge for everyone involved—especially with a breed as naturally active and sensitive as a Weimaraner.

The upcoming weeks of keeping him calm and quiet will definitely test his foster mom’s creativity, but he is in the absolute best hands. Please send your thoughts and prayers to Tanner tomorrow and also give Cheryl, his foster mom extraordinaire, the strength, patience, and positive energy for a smooth, uneventful recovery period.

We love you Tanner!

Cheers to Diesel and his new family for a lifetime of love, treats, and endless adventures!

Social media platforms like Facebook have truly revolutionized rescue networking, turning local adoption efforts into nationwide communities. It is incredible how quickly a single post or video can connect a dog in need with the exact right family, often in a matter of hours. Our foster families are the absolute backbone of that mission by opening their hearts and homes. Thank you Diego and Camp Bow Wow - Duluth Georgia for helping Diesel find the exact right family.

We are absolutely heartbroken to share that we lost our precious boy, Obi, on Tuesday night.
It happened with terrifying speed. Right after dinner, Obi suffered from bloat - Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus (GDV). Even though we followed all the rules, his deep chest and naturally anxious personality made him incredibly vulnerable. It is the mother of all emergencies, and despite noticing the signs immediately, it took him from us in what feels like the blink of an eye.

For the two years he was with us, Obi filled our home with his hyper-alert personality, his booming bark that could wake the dead, and so much love. After being surrendered and returned before finding his way to us through the Atlanta Weimaraner Club Rescue (AWCR), we are so grateful we could give him a safe place where he could finally rest his head and know true love.

We miss him more than words can say. Please, if you have a deep-chested dog, please familiarize yourself with the signs of bloat—knowing them can save a life.
Rest in peace, Obi. You were the best boy.

Key Warning Signs of Bloat in Dogs
• Unsuccessful retching: The dog tries to vomit or cough but nothing comes up except foam or saliva.
• Swollen or hard abdomen: The stomach area looks visibly distended or feels tight like a drum.
• Extreme restlessness: Pacing, whining, or an inability to get comfortable or lie down.
• Heavy panting: Rapid breathing and excessive drooling.
• Pale gums: A sign of shock and poor blood circulation.

If a dog shows these signs, every minute counts, and they must be rushed to an emergency vet immediately.

The Hidden Connection: Anxiety and Bloat
Obi had an anxious personality and was constantly on high alert. This is a massive piece of the puzzle of what may have caused Obi to bloat. Major veterinary studies, including extensive research from Purdue University, have proven that nervousness, anxiety, and a high-stress temperament are significant, independent risk factors for bloat (GDV).
Anxious dogs tend to:
• Swallow excess air (aerophagia): When a dog is hyper-vigilant, panted frequently, or easily startled, they unconsciously gulp air into their stomach.
• Have altered stomach motility: Chronic stress physically changes how the stomach processes food and gas, making a sudden accumulation much easier.

Even though we gave him a full hour to rest after his dinner—which is the textbook standard recommendation—his baseline anxiety meant his stomach was already vulnerable. When he drank water and went out to p**p, a sudden movement or a simple gulp of air may have been all it took to trigger the twist. The fact that he physically vomited his entire dinner means the twist happened with terrifying speed, sealing the stomach's entrance and exit.

Thank you to Dogwood Veterinary Emergency & Specialty Center in Atlanta, known for their compassionate, skilled care during the most agonizing moments a pet owner can face. Knowing that Obi’s transition was handled with gentleness and dignity can bring a small piece of comfort to an otherwise devastating night.

Update: Tanner is home! We are absolutely mystified at the diagnosis. Vet thinks Tanner may have a bit of pancreatitis but the biggest issue was that he was constipated…. Yes you read that right. One thing we learned today is that Fresh pet food is full of fat and vet said no more Fresh pet. Thanks for all the prayers. Now we hope that Tanner can start heartworm treatment tomorrow as scheduled.

Please say a prayer for Tanner… he’s at the emergency vet. Waiting on diagnostics. He was fine last night and this morning he couldn’t walk.
