On this episode of When Pets Fly®: The Veterinary Air Travel Podcast, I spoke with Vail Weymann, CEO of Pupwise, about helping pet parents move from confusion to clarity.

We discussed why trusted guidance is so important, how education should lead to action, and why pet owners need to think beyond booking the flight or scheduling the health certificate.

A pet may be cleared for travel requirements, but that does not automatically mean they are ready for the experience. Medical fitness, comfort with confinement, carrier or crate familiarity, and overall travel preparation all play a role in protecting animal welfare.

This conversation is a great reminder that pets need informed advocates before travel day arrives.

Pet travel is not a last-minute decision.

Many pet owners wait until a flight is booked — or worse, until days before travel — to start thinking about what their pet actually needs.

That is where problems begin.

Safe pet air travel requires more than a ticket and a health certificate. It requires veterinary evaluation, proper documentation timing, crate or carrier selection, crate acclimation, and regulatory compliance.

These steps cannot be rushed, and they cannot be fixed at the airport.

You are doing this because you care about your pet. Preparation is how you protect them during air travel.

Your pet’s crate might be the problem.

Many pets are placed in a travel crate for the first time on the day of travel — and that is a serious mistake.

A crate is not just a container. It is part of your pet’s safety system during air travel.

The travel crate must fit correctly, allow normal posture and movement, and meet airline and IATA requirements. But compliance alone is not enough.

Your pet also needs to be acclimated to confinement, calm inside the crate, and able to tolerate being contained for an extended period of time.

Because at the airport, it is too late to “try it and see.”

Don’t guess on crate setup.
Prepare your pet before travel.

Pet owners often worry most about the airport.

But pet travel risk begins before check-in — with the destination.

A CDC Health Alert about New World screwworm moving into northern Mexico is a reminder that travel can expose pets to disease risks, parasites, livestock or wildlife contact, and health concerns that may appear after returning home.

Pet owners: before you travel, ask your veterinarian what the destination may expose your pet to.

Veterinary teams: use pet travel visits to guide clients beyond the health certificate.
