Your pet’s crate might be the problem.

Many pets are placed in a travel crate for the first time on the day of travel — and that is a serious mistake.

A crate is not just a container. It is part of your pet’s safety system during air travel.

The travel crate must fit correctly, allow normal posture and movement, and meet airline and IATA requirements. But compliance alone is not enough.

Your pet also needs to be acclimated to confinement, calm inside the crate, and able to tolerate being contained for an extended period of time.

Because at the airport, it is too late to “try it and see.”

A CDC Health Alert about New World screwworm moving into northern Mexico is a reminder that travel can expose pets to disease risks, parasites, livestock or wildlife contact, and health concerns that may appear after returning home.
