🛑 Stop Puppy Biting - Head Pet & Hold

We stop puppy biting by holding, handling and petting a puppy’s head.

Almost all puppies love to bite! It is our job to stop puppy from biting. We stop puppy biting with holding, handling and petting puppy’s head and face.

We recommend placing your hand under their hinged jaw. The lower jaw (mandible) is what physically moves when biting. With extensive holding, handling and petting, you are taming your puppy.

Holding and petting your puppy’s head will calm them and condition them to handling their heads and faces. Let your hands mold puppy into the “dog of your dreams”

🐶 Young Puppy Dog Socialization

Young puppies need to socialize with human, dogs and any other animals that are part of your/their life. The HUGE benefit of early puppy socialization is the ability to reduce and/or eliminate dog anxiety & aggression.

Socializing cute little puppies with humans is quite easy. Socializing puppies with other dogs is much more challenging! Our Muttley Crew is the unique and invaluable feature of our residential board and train program.

🐶 Why Stop Puppy Biting?

We talk about puppy biting often in our training videos. Especially how to stop puppy biting. However, it’s important to consider WHY we stop puppies from biting.

Puppies love to bite things! They use their mouths to explore their environment and communicate with others. So, why should we stop puppies from biting humans?

Below our three reasons why we should stop puppies from biting humans.

First, puppy biting hurts! Even though puppy is “just playing”, they can hurt humans. This is especially true for young children and older seniors.

Second, biting puppies can be scary to some people. This is especially true for young children, who can be traumatized by biting puppies.

Third, when puppies (and dogs) bite, it is difficult to trust the dog not to hurt people. This can permanently alter the loving relationship you would like to build with puppy.

We prevent all puppy biting with gentle and practical holding, handling and lots of petting. Gentle hands are really important to prevent puppy biting!

👐 Gentle Hands & Puppy Biting

The best way to prevent puppy biting is with gentle hands to hold, handle and pet puppies. Puppies love to bite! It’s okay to bite things ….. except humans. It is our job to stop puppy from biting humans.

We prevent all puppy biting with gentle and practical holding, handling and lots of petting. Gentle hands are really important to prevent puppy biting!

Unfortunately, some folks smack puppies and dogs in their faces and call it “play”. It is not play and encourages puppy biting - the opposite of our training goals.

🏡 House Training: Puppy Crate Training

House Training prevents puppy from potty accidents and destroying your home. However, crate training provides more than just help with potty training.

Crate Training also PREVENTS anxiety, including Separation Anxiety. We view puppy crates just like baby’s crib. Puppies & babies learn how to self-soothe and pacify themselves. Puppies learn to sleep, even when their humans are not right there every minute of the day!

Puppies are safe in crates ….. especially when traveling. We recommend puppy crate training for all Wonder Weeks Puppies!

🐕 How to Calm Puppy Biting

Puppies love to bite! It’s okay to bite things ….. except humans. It is our job to stop puppy from biting humans. We stop puppy biting with holding, handling and petting puppy.

We like to hold puppies in a “Baby Hold”, but sometimes puppy is not ready for that hold. Puppy needs to be calmed first! That’s when we do a “Modified Baby Hold”.

Puppy Darla was super feisty when we first started holding her. Had to hold her for at least an hour the first time. And we practiced daily. In the video, you can see how much calmer she is after a week of training and holding.

We prevent all puppy biting with practical handling and lots of petting. It is important to start right away, when puppies are still small in size. Let your hands mold puppy into the “dog of your dreams”

Darla is a young Aussiedoodle puppy who bit her human’s hands and clothing. Her humans were also frustrated with biting when petting her.

🐶 Young Puppy Socialization

Young puppies need to socialize with humans, dogs and any other animals that are part of your/their life.

However, time is limited!!! A puppy’s “Critical Socialization Window” starts closing after 14 weeks old. When the window closes, stranger danger creeps in.

Beau is a young (12 week) Golden Retriever. Even though he is a friendly breed, even Goldens need early socialization. Our Golden puppy Karma (8 months) is very willing and able to provide tons of puppy dog play!

💆 Massage Stops Biting & Licking

Massaging a dog’s nervous system calms dog anxiety. Biting and licking are both symptoms of dog anxiety.

We start at the dog’s head. Holding and massaging a dog’s head and neck will stop their biting and licking.

Please Note: “Biting” refers to annoying, inappropriate puppy and adult dog mouthy behavior. It hurts and it could break your skin. But… It is NOT vicious dog biting. We do NOT advocate massaging dangerous dogs.
