Dogs in Good Hands

Dogs in Good Hands Carla Braden of Dogs in Good Hands is dedicated to science-based dog-friendly training methods. Does your dog need help becoming more comfortable and confident?

Hitting some bumps in the road of with life your dog? Frustrated or scared by your dog's behavior and wondering whose advice to trust? I seek to decrease tension on both ends of the leash by helping people and dogs understand each other better. My goal is to improve the life you and your dog live together. I use dog-friendly training methods that do not rely on pain or fear to motivate behavior ch

anges. Positive reinforcement training helps your dog want to do what you want him to do! The methods I use are those endorsed by the most well-educated in the dog training world: veterinary behaviorists and certified applied animal behaviorists (PhD’s in animal behavior who are dog behavior consultants). My dog training mentor, Pat Miller, is a world-renowned trainer and author. I frequently attend continuing education seminars, workshops, and conferences in dog behavior and training, and teach some classes of my own. Whether you need help with manners, anxiety, fear, aggression, or fun tricks, rest assured your dog or cat is in good hands.

Santa Cruz County Animal Shelterput out a call for soft dog training treats, so I took some down and OF COURSE spent time with Bruno, the adoptable border collie estimated about 4-years-old who has vision impairment from cataracts. He looks like he gets around very well--he was not especially hesitant and was good about testing things out so he didn't bump into them hard. He was actually surrendered for killing chickens and livestock nipping, so he'll probably do best without chickens and cats. He was very amenable to training and seemed to already know Sit, Down, and Shake. He seemed pretty easy on leash. Might need some help getting used to indoor living--that is more to do with getting used to the sounds and navigating an indoor environment. People often think that affects potty training, but it really doesn't because the dog is used to going to the bathroom outside. I'd expect to need to do some remedial housetraining with any new dog, in any new house. He should probably also learn Leave It for when he is tempted by preylike animals, like most dogs would need to learn, and to Wait in case he is going toward danger he can't see. Most importantly, he was very happy to greet me and several other people in the lobby :)

Searching is one of my favorite things to teach! We do informal searches for confidence building in new environments, desensitizing to stressors, building engagement, and work. Here, Calvin was finding my key I tossed in the field and legitimately could not find without him.

Xanadu’s adopter is thinking she might make a good therapy dog. From what I hear, it sounds like she’s already been doing her job in the community. I don’t know, I kind of feel like my work here is done 😊

After Bo’s family adopted him from the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter, they asked for help with the number one thing parents with young kids request: limiting mouthing from those sharp sharky puppy teeth!
