🚨FOSTER OR ADOPTER NEEDED🚨

Cassie is an Albuquerque Animal Welfare Westside shelter dog who was showing signs of shelter deterioration… and we REALLY don’t want her to have to go backšŸ’” she is about a year old per the shelter. She was a stray! She’s been at the shelter since the beginning of MAY😭😭😭

ID: A1944374

Cassie was given the opportunity to spend some time in one of our volunteer’s homes so we could learn who she is outside of the shelter environment. & friends!🄹 This girl is GOOD.

🐶Dogs: Cassie LOVE LOVES other dogs! She plays HARD & can definitely be pushy when asking another dog to play, so her dream home would have another playful dog who appreciates her enthusiasm. A home with a canine buddy would be IDEAL for this social little lady!

Home: She is PHENOMENAL in her crate & appears to be mostly, if not completely, potty trained!

Humans: OBSESSED. She loves humans of all kinds & is an incredibly happy, affectionate, wiggly girl. Cassie plays super duper hard… & then cuddles just as hard. She is basically an athlete w a minor in snuggling. She frequently wants to check in with her humans with little licks

🐱Cats: Cassie is currently living in a home w 5 cats & has been doing well! The cats mostly keep to themselves, so we can’t say she’s been extensively cat tested, but so far she has shown that she can peacefully share her space w them. If you’re interested in Cassie & have cats… we can work on gauging her interactions a little more! But our vol doesn’t feel a need to lock the cats up when Cassie is free roamingšŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø

Cassie has shown us exactly what we hoped she would: there is a really wonderful dog underneath the stress seen at the shelter.

But her time in our vol’s home is LIMITED. Without a foster or adopter, Cassie will have to return to the shelter where she was already deteriorating. We would LOVE to prevent that from happening. She has already shown us that she can thrive in a home. Now she just needs someone willing to give her one.

FOSTER OR ADOPT CASSIE!

Reach out to us or AWD if you can help keep this sweet, wiggly, dog loving girl OUT of the shelter!

šŸ“ABQ NM

PLEASE SHARE! even if you can’t foster or adopt, Cassie’s person may be on your friends list!

šŸ’•DAY 6 OF POSTING JOHN EVERY DAY UNTIL HE FINDS A FOSTER OR ADOPTERšŸ’•

ā°34 DAYS LEFT. DEADLINE: 10/13ā°

TODAY IS A BIG DAY FOR JOHNšŸ¤ž

Remember that potential foster home we mentioned yesterday? JOHN HAS HIS FIRST MEET & GREET TODAY!šŸŽ‰

This home does have other dogs, so we’re going into it cautiously. BUT… a meet & greet is better than no meets or interest! This possible home indicated they have extensive experience managing resources in multi-dog homes, & that’s EXACTLY the type of experience someone would need to successfully have John live w other dogs.

John genuinely likes other dogs. His issue isn’t dog aggression… it’s resource guarding inside the home. Well. & he’s not exactly the best at meeting new dogs🤣 unless that new dog appreciates an opera show!! If he lives w another animal, meals, toys & other valuable resources need to be completely separate & consistently managed.

So today we’re crossing every finger, toe & paw that maybe… just MAYBE… this could buy our old man some more time. ā¤ļø

BUT PLEASE DON’T STOP SHARING HIM. Even if today’s meet & greet is perfect… THIS IS A FOSTER. JOHN STILL NEEDS AN ADOPTER!!! & we would still LOVE to find an only animal home where John wouldn’t require that level of lifelong management. (Unless he proves to improve his RG habits while in foster care)

So while John is off trying to impress some potential roommates today… WE KEEP LOOKING FOR HIS FOREVER HUMAN.

šŸ”Older gentleman seeking permanent residence
šŸ’•Human obsessed
🐶Loves dog friends
šŸ—£ļøOccasionally performs live opera
🄰Aggressive nuzzler/cuddler
šŸŽ“FREE trainer available w adoption or foster from PKR
šŸ„lifelongMedical resources available

34 DAYS. KEEP SHARING JOHN.

& everybody please collectively tell John Pawvarotti to BE COOL AT HIS MEET & GREET. šŸ˜šŸ¤£šŸ¤ž

John is currently under the care of Albuquerque Animal Welfare with ID A1947281. John can be fostered or adopted through the shelter! Or if we find a committed foster or adopter… PKR will officially pull him into the rescue.

ā€¼ļøšŸ¶ADOPT MEšŸ¶ā€¼ļø

Wellsy
2 years old
Black Pit Bull Mix (Cane corso?)
Female, spayed, Fully Vetted

Some dogs need a little time to show you who they are outside of the shelter. Wellsy needed approximately negative 2 seconds. šŸ˜‚ā¤ļø Wellsy came to the shelter after an incredibly unfortunate situation. Her human, who was experiencing homelessness, was admitted to the hospital, leaving Wellsy inside their hot vehicle for more than 24 hours. We don’t know the circumstances beyond that. We don’t know why no one was able to get to her sooner, whether her person was ever able to come back for her, or what their life together looked like before that day. What we DO know is that Wellsy found herself alone in a shelter kennel. 1 of our vols spotted this absolutely STUNNING black pittie sitting there & immediately fell in love. unfortunately, we know black dogs, especially Pitties, can sometimes wait much longer to be noticed in shelters. Soooo… we decided she didn’t need to wait.šŸ–¤ We brought her home to see what she was like outside of the shelter & whether she could potentially fit into a foster home. The verdict??? SHE’S BASICALLY PERFECT.

🐶Dogs: AMAZING! Wellsy genuinely loves loves other dogs. She’s social, playful, gentle, & absolutely thrilled to have canine friends. She would LOVE having another playful dog in her forever home!

🐱Cats: Can live w cats. She is currently being fostered w 5 cats/kittens

šŸ‘©ā€šŸ‘©ā€šŸ‘§ā€šŸ‘¦Humans/Kids: She has yet to meet a stranger. Wellsy LOVES people & is incredibly affectionate. She’s cuddly, sweet, gentle, & very much interested in being wherever her humans are. She does jump a bit on adults, especially new ones. But she absolutely adores children anytime she has met one in public. We haven’t noticed her jumping on kiddos like she does with adults. She seems to know they need a gentler touch.

šŸ Home Life: She is mostly, if not completely, potty trained & does okay in her crate. A sturdy crate is better if she has to be crated for long hours. But she has done ok in a regular wire as well. She has transitioned into home life beautifully & is overall an incredibly easy dog to have around. When crated, she needs blankets vs a stuffed bed because if/when she has an anxious moment in her crate, she will create a winter wonderland.

Personality: Perfect combo of cuddly & playful. She loves romping around w other dogs, playing w humans, & then settling in for some serious affection. And perhaps her most important personality trait…

THE PIBBLE NIBBLESšŸ˜‚šŸ˜

If you know, you know. Wellsy is a professional nibbler. Blankets? Nibble. Toys? Nibble. Random object conveniently located near her face? Nibble nibble nibble. It seems to be a little self-soothing behavior for her, & it is ridiculously adorable. To note: her nibbles are very soft and not intended to destroy. She has yet to ruin any of the items she pibble nibbles (like her foster mom’s couch cover… or any of the stuffy toys… or whatever else she chooses to nibble!)

She loves dogs. She loves humans. She loves cuddling. She loves playing. She loves nibbling things like a tiny corn cob with legs. Basically… Wellsy is just a REALLY freaking good dogšŸ–¤

Now she just needs someone to notice her the way our volunteer did. Hopefully her breed and color won’t continue to make her overlooked… because her personality is FANTASTIC and she is a phenomenal breed advocate. She’s the type of dog that would easily change the mind of any bully breed hater!!!

ā€¼ļøšŸ¶ADOPT MEšŸ¶ā€¼ļø

Frito
American Bully (Pocket)
4yr old male
Neutered, Fully Vetted
Has Cerebellar Hypoplasia (CH)

Some dogs walk into a room… Frito sort of wobbles, stumbles, occasionally crashes into something, gets back up, & THEN walks into the room. This little dude has an enormous personality, LOVES humans, LOVES dog friends, & has no idea he’s ā€œdifferentā€. Here is Frito’s LONG (😬) bio!

Frito has CH, which means the part of his brain responsible for coordination (Cerebellum) didn’t develop normally. Basically… Frito is a wobbly dog! He falls. He gets back up. He gets excited, loses even MORE control of his body, falls again, & carries on w his day. Do NOT look at him w pity when this happens… he is fully convinced he is an incredibly athletic & perfectly coordinated.

🐶Dogs: VERY dog friendly & LOVES friends. Currently being fostered w many dogs! His foster frequently brings shelter dogs home for sleepovers, so Frito has been around MANY dogs. He is actually one of the dogs his foster uses to help test behavior of shelter dogs! He LOVES carrying toys around, shoving them directly into dog’s face, & vocally enticing them. His future dog sibling better love to be groomed… he loves grooming his friends. Frito can be adopted w other dogs, or be your only! Whichever works for him!šŸ™‚

🐱Cats: Maybe! Frito currently lives w 5 cats & does well majority of the time. He can walk past them, relax while they walk past him, chew a toy nearby, & even peacefully shares opposite couch ends. Where things get tricky is when a cat gets too close to him or corrects him. Sometimes he takes correction perfectly & respects it. Other times he becomes over aroused, barks back, & tries to pursue the cat. However… The more excited Frito becomes, the less his body cooperates… so actually pursuing a cat becomes is difficult. PREFER a home w/o cats, but a home w plenty of cat only space, & humans comfortable w management may work!

šŸ‘¶Kids: Frito is looking for an adult only home. Not necessarily because he dislikes children! His CH causes unpredictable body movements, & he becomes even less coordinated when excited. He also does NOT reliably take treats gently. Frito knows there’s a treat somewhere near your fingers… determining exactly which part is treat & which part is finger is where things occasionally go wrong. Long treats or even offering treats from a spatula is ideal! An adult can manage his grabbing, recognize when he is becoming over aroused, read his body language, & remember not to reach into his mouth for food/toys. Those simply aren’t expectations trusted w children.

šŸ Home Life: Frito is AMAZING in his crate & does not have accidents while crated & has not shown signs of sep anxiety! He also knows how to use a doggy door. When he’s loose in the house, he does need frequent opportunities to go outside. Once Frito learns the layout of an environment, he actually navigates it mostly ā€œnormalā€! When he gets really excited… his coordination decreases & occasionally an innocent object becomes collateral damage. His foster’s unsecured decorative blanket ladder has learned this lessonšŸ˜‚

Keeping fragile/breakable items out of Frito’s flight path is a good idea! āœˆļøšŸš€šŸ„šŸ¦…

🦓Resources: Frito does resource guard food/treats/toys from other dogs, but meals & bully sticks being fed in the crate is all that’s needed. He can receive treats/have toys around other dogs w/o issue… he just doesn’t like a dog trying to take something that already belongs to him. Frito has also shown some RG behavior toward humans, although his CH & tendency to become VERY excited complicate the picture. If someone tries to physically take a toy or bone from his mouth, he may become overly excited about getting it back & has less control over exactly where his mouth goes. Thankfully, this has been extremely easy for humans to manage… we simply don’t take things out of his mouth! Frito is easy to redirect/trade for something else.

ā€¼ļøHis adopter should be comfortable continuing that practice rather than unnecessarily challenging him over resources.

🧠Medical: Frito’s CH looks dramatic, but it does NOT require medication/surgery/ongoing treatment. It is non progressive, it’s simply how his body/brain works! He does tend to become overheated & easily physically/emotionally overwhelmed, so he is NOT your summertime adventure or 10 mile hiking partner. Although… he probably has the mindset of it! Think a little more French Bulldog lifestyle. He can absolutely play & enjoy adventures, but his humans need to recognize when he has had enough. Which is easy. This boy is all the drama & has no secrets… he will make his discomfort clear & known lol

He is currently taking anxiety meds to see if it helps decrease some of his overstimulation in his busy foster home. We aren’t convinced he needs anxiety meds forever, & may be taken off by us or his adopter! Prozac takes about a month to ā€œkick inā€

ā¤ļøHumans: Frito is RIDICULOUSLY affectionate. He does not simply want to cuddle next to you. He would prefer to unzip your body, climb inside, & somehow become 1 w you. Personal space is simply not something Frito believes in. He has been friendly w essentially every1 he has gotten to know while in foster care & currently lives w a man & woman. He is particularly obsessed w the man in his foster home! Frito was originally fostered by his current foster several years ago through another rescue & was adopted. After his adopter became pregnant, the dynamics within the home changed. Reportedly, Frito unexpectedly became uncomfortable w the husband, the relationship w his dog sister changed, & once a newborn entered the picture, managing every1 became increasingly difficult.

Before he was surrendered, we sent a trainer into the home so we could better understand what was happening & hopefully help the family make things work. Ultimately, the trainer felt there were MANY different dynamics contributing to the situation rather than this simply being a case of Frito being a ā€œbad dog.ā€ The wife was willing to continue working w him, but the whole household wasn’t, so he returned to his former foster. & when he did??? He basically picked up exactly where he left off years ago. We have seen 1 concerning interaction w a stranger since he returned. About 2 hours into an adoption event, Frito was hot, exhausted, heavily panting, & clearly overstimulated. A man reached down to pet him after Frito had a fall, Frito initially accepted the interaction, & then suddenly snapped toward him. We have NOT seen this behavior w the humans he knows & trusts in his foster home or during other public outings, but it tells us something important about Frito: his humans need to listen when he says he has had enough. Also! You have stairs in your home or yard? No biggie. He may not be perfect with them… but he used them as carefully as possible or just avoids them when possible! He mostly knows his limits šŸ˜‰

ā¤ļøPersonality: Frito is cuddly, playful, vocal, goofy, dramatic, dog obsessed, & completely unapologetic about being Frito. He LOVES toys. He LOVES playing w other dogs. He LOVES his humans even more. & despite falling over approximately 400% more often than the average dog, he has absolutely 0 interest in being treated like a disabled dog.

When Frito falls? He gets back up. When his legs stop cooperating because he’s too excited? He keeps trying. When you look at him & think, ā€œOhhhh, poor baby!ā€? He’s already halfway across the room chasing his ball. Frito isn’t going to be the right dog for every home.

He needs forever humans who respect & advocate his boundaries, & can laugh when his brain says GO but his legs say TIMBER.

In return, you get one of the cuddliest, funniest, most loving little weirdos you’ll ever meet. Frito doesn’t need someone to feel sorry for him. He certainly doesn’t feel sorry for himself. All of our adoptions begin with an app, a meet/greet, & a min 2 week trial adoption to ensure it’s a good fit! Filling out an application doesn’t obligate you in anyway. Let’s find Frito’s forever people!

šŸ’•DAY 5 OF POSTING JOHN EVERY DAY UNTIL HE FINDS A FOSTER OR ADOPTERšŸ’•

ā°35 DAYS LEFT… DEADLINE: 10/13ā°

WE HAVE A LITTLE JOHN UPDATE. John has a potential meet & greet with a FOSTER home TOMORROW!

Now… this home DOES have other dogs, which obviously isn’t ideal placement for John. BUT they indicated they have extensive experience managing resources in multi-dog homes with resource guarding dogs… and we showed them all the videos we have and all the info we have… so we feel it’s worth at least meeting & seeing how everyone does and considering the option.

We do believe that under the RIGHT circumstances, John could potentially live w other animals. But we cannot emphasize RIGHT CIRCUMSTANCES enough. John resource guards from other animals in the home, which means his humans cannot get complacent. Meals must be completely separate. Toys must be completely separate. High value resources must be managed. Even if everyone gets along beautifully 99% of the time, management can’t disappear because things are going well.

That’s why an only animal home is STILL our preference & we REALLY need those options to keep coming! And better yet???

šŸ”AN ADOPTER!!!

Even if tomorrow’s meet & greet goes amazingly & this foster works out, JOHN WILL STILL NEED A FOREVER HOME. This would buy him the time he desperately needs… it wouldn’t finish his story.

So PLEASE don’t stop sharing John because he has a potential lead. We even hesitate to SHARE this small update in fear it will stop your shares… but we believe all your shares are the reason WHY John even has this POTENTIAL possibility in the first place. So please. Keep. On. Sharing. And if you want to step up, even as a backup option, please reach out!

We’re cautiously excited.šŸ¤ž Even the idea of a meet & greet is progress. Keep this momentum going!

But until this man has a permanent address… WE KEEP POSTING JOHN!!!šŸŽ

Today’s John lesson: JOHN LIKES DOGS. HE JUST DOESN’T WANT A ROOMMATE

Seriously!! Look at these pictures. This man showed us he LOVES playing w dog friends. He enjoyed meeting them, romping around & having a good time.

So why does John need to be the only dog in his home? John displays resource guarding toward other dogs in a home environment. Because of that, we believe he’s safest & happiest living as an only pet. (RGs towards DOGS. NOT humans)

Basically:

āœ…Doggy friends
āœ…Doggy play dates (NOT A DOG PARK!!!!)
āœ…Romping around together
āŒRoommate
āœ”ļøonly pet home and no interaction with other dogs ever is ALSO just fine!

John said absolutely not. Please leave my house.

🐱He’s also had some limited exposure to cats, but not enough for us to confidently recommend living with one. An only animal home is best.

John doesn’t need EVERY home to work for him. He needs ONE.

One person without other pets who wants a goofy, affectionate older pittie who loves humans, gives excellent nuzzles & transforms into John Pawvarotti

His foster is moving out of the country, and if John doesn’t have placement by Oct 13th, he returns to the city shelter… where he was previously being discussed for potential euthanasia.

37 DAYS TO FIND HIS PERSON.

Maybe they aren’t following us.

ā¤ļø BUT THEY MIGHT BE FOLLOWING YOU. PLEASE SHARE JOHN. ā¤ļø
