🚨 A week ago, Owl was found discarded on a Brooklyn sidewalk, her body so profoundly starved that she could barely lift her head.

She had been deprived of food for so long that her body was shutting down. Bedsores covered her skeletal frame. Her nails were horrifically overgrown, and the tip of her tail was necrotic and ulcerated.

Today, we have the update we have been hoping for... Owl is well enough to leave the hospital ❤️

Her liver enzymes have begun to improve with medication, and she is continuing to slowly, but safely, gain weight.

Owl currently weighs just 27 pounds.
She should weigh closer to 47.

She will need to remain on a carefully managed feeding plan and still has a long road of healing ahead. The damage to the tip of Owl’s tail is so severe that bone is exposed. Her doctors will reassess it in the coming days to see if it is able to heal on its own. If not, part of her tail may ultimately need to be removed.

For a little girl whose body had been pushed so close to the edge, leaving the hospital is a huge milestone. It would not have been possible without our incredible community of supporters. 🫶

Keep fighting, little girl. We are so incredibly proud of you.

🐾 Service Dogs 101!

What makes a Service Dog a Service Dog? It’s not the vest, it’s the training.

Service Dogs are specially trained to perform specific tasks that help a person with a disability. And under the ADA, trained Service Dogs have public access rights, allowing them to accompany their handlers in many places where pets typically aren’t allowed.

During National Service Dog Month, we’re helping our communities better understand these incredible working dogs and the important role they play in helping people live safer, more independent lives.

It’s not always obvious when our pets are hurting. Animals often hide their pain, making the signs easy to miss. Some are noticeable, such as limping or yelping. Others are more subtle, including sleeping more than usual, seeming less playful, or experiencing changes in litter box habits.

September is Animal Pain Awareness Month, a reminder to watch for these signs and talk to your veterinarian if you think your pet may be in pain. Never give your pet human medication unless directed by a veterinarian, since many medications can be toxic to animals.
