Watch out for your rabbits over Halloween 🎃 and the Fireworks 🎆 season!

Rabbits and other small pets are easily stressed by storms, bangs, whizzes and other loud noises!

Signs of stress (which may be tricky to observe in prey animals):
Stamping of feet
Staying motionless
Trying to escape
Not eating

To keep stress to a minimum, make any changes to their environment gradually over the next week.
✅ Please give them lots of extra hay to burrow into. Added hiding boxes can be appreciated.
✅ Bring their home into an un heated room or shed if possible.
✅ Turn their hutch to face a wall or fence if not and part cover with a large blanket or duvet, leaving space for ventilation.
✅ A bonded pair of rabbits will hugely comfort each other.
✅ If you have a house rabbit, draw the curtains early and play some background TV or radio.
✅ Don’t over fuss them but check in regularly
A frightened rabbit can experience stasis, where their gut function slows or even stops.

If your rabbit stops eating, is sitting “hunched up” or passing small/no droppings then it needs immediate
Veterinary attention.

Top Tips for keeping Cats safe and happy during Halloween & Firework season

If your cat chooses to hide away under the bed or on top of the wardrobe - leave them alone. Don’t try to coax them out as this is where they feel most secure.

✅ On the day you expect fireworks, get them safely inside by mid afternoon and close all doors and windows.

✅ Place a FELIWAY or ZENIFEL diffuser in the room where they chooses to spend their time in. These excellent pheromone product will help them feel more secure.

✅ Make sure they have a microchip and that the details are up to date.
If they do escape, frightened and confused cats can easily become lost.

✅ Get them used to using an indoor litter tray (add soil if necessary / place well away from their food and bed) before and during the firework season.

✅ Draw the curtains early to reduce flashes and put the TV/radio on to mask sounds.

✅ Don’t try to pick them up or restrain them.
Fearful cats prefer to cope alone.

NB In multi cat households, shutting them in together may cause disharmony.
Ensure you provide enough food, water, litter trays, beds and hiding places, so no one has to wait or share!

💥FIREWORKS AND DOGS💥

Over the next couple of weeks, there will be several firework displays and many dogs will find this a difficult time.
We have some excellent calming remedies to help with mild noise phobias and safe, effective medications for dogs who really suffer with severe anxiety.
Please get in touch and speak to one of our vets or clinical nurses for specific advice for your own dog.

Positive things you can do at home:

🔥 Walk your dog during daylight hours
🔥 Feed a good meal earlier in the day and allow for toileting well before nightfall
🔥 Before it gets dark, close doors, windows and curtains.
🔥 Turn on the TV or play some music, to disguise outside noise.
🔥 RELAX yourself and act normally.

It seems natural, to want to comfort your dog when they show signs of anguish (panting, pacing, whining) but doing so too much, may increase their anxiety. Dogs are extremely perceptive to our moods, so if we worry, they will too.

🔥 If your dog wants to hide, that’s fine - it’s an excellent coping behaviour. In fact making them a cosy den (rug over a table/ under stairs cupboard /behind the sofa works well. Add comfy bedding and perhaps some treats to find or a stuffed Kong to lick at.

Of course, gentle reassurance is good but try not to “over fuss”
✅ Check you pet’s microchip details are up to date!
We regularly have “lost” pets bought to the surgery at this time of year. Fearful pets may escape through an open door or bolt whilst out walking.
This will ensure, if they do get lost, they can be safely reunited with you as soon as possible😊

PLEASE HELP US FIND THIS CAT’S OWNER

We’re hoping to locate the owner of a much-loved cat who was brought into Nurture Vet GP & Dentist this morning.

Sadly, this 13-year-old male grey tabby was found deceased by a member of the public on the path between Blueberry Way and Blackberry Drive this morning.

He is microchipped, but unfortunately, we haven’t yet been able to get through to his registered owner.

We know how heartbreaking it is to lose a beloved pet, and we would really like to make sure his family is informed.

If you recognise the description of this cat, or know someone who lives in the area and may be missing him, please contact Nurture Vet GP & Dentist

Please share this post locally to help us reach his family.

Would you know if your cat was in pain?

Cats are incredibly good at hiding discomfort, and the signs that something isn't quite right can be surprisingly subtle.

As a Cat Friendly veterinary practice, we're passionate about helping owners recognise these little changes before they become bigger problems.

This is a really useful post from International Cat Care, and we hope you find it useful,

Sometimes the smallest changes in behaviour can tell us the most.

£250 raised for Dogs Friends!

We’re delighted to share that our Charity Dog Show and cake sale at Nurture Vet GP & Dentist on Saturday 26th September raised a fantastic £250 for Dog Friends!

A huge thank you to all our wonderful clients and visitors who came along, joined in the fun and donated so generously.

We’d also like to say a big thank you to our clinical team who worked so hard throughout the day — especially duty Nurse Sarah and Nurse Greta who worked with Vet Sarah, inside looking after some complicated clinical cases at the practice.

A special thank you also to Lauren Clark Art for joining us — her beautiful artwork and face painting were really appreciated and helped make the afternoon extra special. To see more of Lauren’s lovely work, visit www.laurenclarkart.co.uk.

A brilliant team effort and a lovely afternoon, all while raising money for a fantastic local charity. Thank you to everyone who supported us.
