🐾 WISDOM WEDNESDAY: LOOSE LEAD WALKING 🐾
Loose lead walking isn’t about having your dog glued to your side for the whole walk — it’s about helping them learn how to walk comfortably and calmly alongside you. 🐶💚
✨ WHY IS IT GOOD?
🐾 Less pulling = more comfortable walking
Constant pulling can put unnecessary pressure on your dog’s neck and body. A loose lead makes walks more comfortable for everyone.
🧠 It teaches focus & self-control
Your dog learns to pay attention to you and make calmer choices around all those exciting smells, sights and distractions!
💪 It’s better for their body
Learning not to constantly pull helps encourage a more natural and comfortable way of walking.
❤️ It strengthens your relationship
Training together builds communication, trust and understanding between you and your dog.
🐕 SO, HOW DO YOU TEACH IT?
✨ Reward the good behaviour — praise or treat your dog when they’re walking nicely on a loose lead.
✨ Stop when they pull — when the lead goes tight, stop and wait for the lead to loosen before continuing.
✨ Keep sessions short — you don’t need to practise for the entire walk. A few minutes at a time is plenty!
✨ Keep it fun & realistic — make training enjoyable and remember that your dog is still out there to sniff, explore and have fun! 🌿🐶
And most importantly… the whole walk doesn’t need to be perfect! 🥰
Every dog is different and will learn at their own pace. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself or your dog. Celebrate the little wins, give them plenty of opportunities to be a dog, and enjoy your walks together. 💚🐾
Progress over perfection, always! ✨
