🐾 Training Tip Thursday: Reward the calm moments!

We often notice our dogs when they’re jumping up, barking or getting into mischief—but what about when they’re quietly making good choices?

If your dog settles on their bed, calmly watches something pass or chooses to relax beside you, gently place a treat between their paws.

There’s no need to ask them to do anything first. You’re simply showing them that calm behaviour is worth repeating 💙

The more we notice and reward those lovely quiet moments, the more likely our dogs are to offer them again!

Give it a try today and let me know how your dog gets on 🐶

🐾🎯 LOOKING FOR SOMETHING A LITTLE DIFFERENT TO DO WITH YOUR DOG?

Our Scurry Dog classes are all about having FUN with your training while building some brilliant everyday skills along the way! 🐶

Inspired by gundog-style games, Scurry Dog is perfect for dogs who love to use their brain, nose and body — and you definitely don’t need a gundog to join us!

We work on skills such as:

🎯 Retrieves
🐾 Place board training
👃 Scentwork & searching
🦮 Heelwork
💨 Sends & directional work
✋ Stop cues
🧠 Impulse control
💙 Confidence building

All taught through fun, reward-based games that you can continue practising at home and on your walks.

If you’ve ever thought “my dog needs a job!” — this could be exactly what you’re looking for. 👀

📅 Our next Scurry Dog course starts this September!

Spaces are limited to keep classes small and give everyone plenty of individual support.

🐾 WHAT HAVE WE BEEN UP TO THIS WEEK? 🐾

It’s been another busy week of training at Abby’s! 💙

We’ve had dogs working on everything from everyday life skills to some slightly more unusual challenges…

🎯 Scurry Dog — heelwork, place board sends, distance stays and stop cues!

🐾 Life Skills — hand touches, stays while handlers move around their dogs, boomerang recalls and chin rests!

🐶 1:1 Training — working on individual goals and helping owners build skills they can actually use in everyday life.

One of the things I love most about our training is that it’s not about having the dog who can perform the fanciest tricks.

It’s about building confidence, communication and practical skills that make life together that little bit easier. 🧡

And, most importantly, making training something both ends of the lead can enjoy!

📸 Here’s a little look at what we’ve been getting up to this week…

🐾💙 WE’RE NOT QUITE OVER IT YET… 💙🐾

What a day we had at the Raise the Woof Charity Dog Show for East Lancashire Hospice! 🐶🎉

We’ve been looking back through all the photos and videos and there are just TOO many good ones not to share! 😂

From super speedy Scurry runs 💨 to dogs who decided the course was merely a suggestion… we absolutely loved seeing so many of you having a go!

And of course, the best bit…

✨ Together we raised an amazing £200 for East Lancashire Hospice from our Have a Go Scurry! ✨

A HUGE thank you again to everyone who came over, had a go, chatted to us and helped support such a fantastic local cause. 💙

🎥 Spot your dog in the Reel?

Please feel free to message me if you’d like me to send over or share any of the photos or videos I captured of your dog on the day — I’m more than happy to! 🐾📸

And if your dog discovered a new love for Scurry… 👀🎯

Our next Scurry Dog classes start this September! Maybe we’ll see a few familiar faces there! 🐶🧡

📅🐾 WHAT’S ON THIS SEPTEMBER AT ABBY’S?

September is looking VERY busy and we’ve still got a few opportunities to come and train with us! 🐶💙

Whether you’ve just welcomed a puppy, want something fun to do with your dog or need a little more specialist support, there’s something for you.

🐶 4-WEEK PUPPY CLASS
Perfect for building those all-important foundations — recall, loose lead walking, focus, impulse control, socialisation and tackling those everyday puppy problems.

🎯 SCURRY DOG
Fun gundog-inspired games including retrieves, place boards, scentwork, heelwork, sends, stop cues and more!

🐕 6-WEEK REACTIVITY PROGRAMME
Our supportive programme for dogs who struggle around other dogs or triggers.

Our next courses start Saturday 26th September, with availability in our classes including our 1pm PM group.

🐾 LIFE SKILLS
Continue building your dog’s training and take those skills into everyday life.

🧡 1:1 TRAINING
Prefer individual support? We also have personalised training available covering everything from recall and loose lead walking to puppy training and reactivity.

September will be here before we know it, so if you’ve been thinking about joining us, now’s a great time to get booked in!

🐕💙 DO WALKS SOMETIMES FEEL LIKE YOU’RE CONSTANTLY WATCHING FOR THE NEXT DOG?

Changing direction. Crossing the road. Checking what’s coming around the corner.

Living with a reactive dog can make something as simple as going for a walk feel like a lot.

Our 6-week Reactivity Programme is designed to give you practical skills, a better understanding of your dog’s behaviour and the confidence to work through real-life situations together.

Our next courses begin:

📅 Saturday 26th September

🌤️ 11:30am — AM Class
🌤️ 1pm — PM Class

⭐ We’re particularly looking to fill our remaining PM spaces!

Across the programme we’ll work on areas including:

🐾 Understanding your dog’s triggers
🧠 Recognising body language & thresholds
↩️ Practical management skills for walks
🐕 Working appropriately around other dogs
✨ Building focus and engagement
💙 Helping your dog make better choices around triggers
🦮 Taking those skills into real-life situations

Everything is taught using positive, science-based training methods, with small class sizes so you and your dog get the support you need.

Your dog doesn’t need to be able to cope close to other dogs to join us — that’s exactly why we’re there.

📲 Book your September place through our website.

Not sure whether the class is right for your dog? Send me a message and we can have a chat. 🧡

🐾 Happy International Dog Day! 🐾

Today is all about celebrating the wonderful dogs who make our lives brighter, busier and full of muddy pawprints! 🧡

Of course, I couldn’t let the day pass without mentioning my own two—Jesse and Peanut! 🐶🐶

Jesse is the dog who changed the direction of my business and inspired me to learn more about dog training and behaviour. Our journey hasn’t always been straightforward, but she has taught me so much about patience, understanding and celebrating every little win. She’s He’s also always happiest when she’s playing gundog games or joining me on the paddleboard!

Then there’s Peanut—my little chocolate and tan dachshund with a huge personality! She certainly knows what she wants and brings plenty of fun, affection and dachshund determination to every day.

They’re completely different, but I wouldn’t change either of them. They are a huge part of why I love what I do! 🧡

I also feel incredibly lucky to work with so many amazing dogs through classes, 1:1 training and our secure field. Thank you for trusting me to be part of their journeys.

Now it’s your turn—share your favourite photo of your dog in the comments and tell me what makes them so special! 📸👇

🏆🐾 OUR HAVE A GO SCURRY WINNER… WILLOW! 🐾🏆

A HUGE congratulations to the super speedy Willow, who took the top spot at our Raise the Woof Have a Go Scurry with an incredible time of…

⏱️ 5.97 SECONDS!! 💨🔥

And she definitely had to work for it — there was some VERY close competition throughout the day, with some seriously speedy dogs hot on her paws! 👀🐶

But Willow managed to hold onto that number one spot and take home our winner’s prize! 🏆🧡

A massive well done Willow — what a run!! 👏🐾

And well done to every dog who took part. We absolutely loved watching you all have a go!

🎯 The question is… can anyone beat 5.97 seconds next time?! 👀
