One of my favourite parts of this job is getting to be part of the journey as both the dog AND their owners grow in confidence.

What you need when your puppy first comes home can look completely different a few months later...

Then adolescence arrives, the picture changes again, and suddenly you’re facing a whole new set of questions. 😂

That’s why I love seeing familiar faces come back through the door, I don't want you to need me forever, but each stage gives us another opportunity to build on what you already know... and eventually something really lovely starts to happen.

You stop immediately thinking, “What am I supposed to do?”

You start understanding why your dog might be struggling and how you can help them through it.

That’s the bit I really care about.

Reviews like Eric’s mean an awful lot because I’ve been lucky enough to watch that whole relationship develop 💛

If you’re at the beginning of that journey, or you’ve hit the adolescent stage and could do with some support, my puppy and adolescent classes are open for booking 🐾

Ramsbottom… Paws-On Training is coming to you 👀🐾

I’ve actually been looking for the right venue in Ramsbottom for quite a while. It’s an area where I already see quite a few clients, and every time I’ve been over there I’ve thought the same thing…

“I’d really love to run classes here.”

And then, very appropriately, one of my lovely clients helped make it happen. 😂

She originally came to me for puppy classes, then 1:1.... then adolescent classes... then scentwork.

And somewhere along the way, we became friends too.

She lives opposite a local church hall and knew they had some availability coming up.

A few messages later, I went to have a look… and I’ve now officially got a new Paws-On Training venue in Ramsbottom 🙌

Even better, it’s right by a really popular dog-walking route, so it feels like such a good fit for the kind of practical, real-life training I love doing! Woohoo!

Classes will be starting there from November, and I’m really excited to bring more reward-based group training to the area.

So if you’re in Ramsbottom or nearby and you’ve been waiting for Paws-On classes a little closer to home…this one is for you. 🐾

Keep an eye on my website for class dates and booking details coming very soon.

Adolescent classes aren’t puppy class 2.0! 🙈

The dog who walks into an adolescent class isn’t the same dog who walked into puppy class a few months earlier.

Your puppy might have learned the foundations beautifully, then adolescence arrives and suddenly the world gets a LOT more interesting!

Other dogs become harder to ignore.
Recall gets shakier and getting their attention outside can feel like a completely different challenge.

People think that means puppy training failed, but it means we now need to help your dog use those skills when there are bigger distractions, stronger impulses and a teenage brain thrown into the mix 😂

That’s what my adolescent classes are designed for! We work on focus around distractions, recall, loose lead walking and helping your dog notice exciting things without becoming completely fixated on them.

But we also talk about what is actually happening during adolescence.

Because understanding WHY your dog suddenly feels different to train can make this stage much less frustrating for both of you.

Puppy classes give you the foundations, then adolescent classes help you turn those foundations into real-life skills!

So if you’ve recently found yourself thinking…
They KNOW this, so why aren’t they doing it anymore?!”

You’re exactly the kind of owner these classes are there to support... 🐾

I have upcoming Adolescent Dog Courses for dogs aged 7 months–2 years, with a maximum of just 5 dogs per class so you get plenty of individual support 😀

Comment TEENAGER and I’ll send you the details of the upcoming courses. 👇

“He knows this!!!”

Three words I hear ALL the time in adolescent classes 😂

And I get it.

You’ve taught the sit, practised the recall, worked on focus.... you KNOW your dog can do it.

So when they suddenly can’t do it outside, around another dog, or when something exciting is happening, it can feel incredibly frustrating.

But there’s a big difference between:

knowing a behaviour and being able to do it when the environment gets harder.

Your dog might be able to sit beautifully in the kitchen, that doesn’t automatically mean they can do the same thing when there’s another dog 10 metres away, someone kicking a football, three amazing smells and a pigeon making questionable life choices nearby. 😂

The behaviour hasn’t necessarily disappeared.

The picture has just changed.

And adolescence often makes that picture MUCH harder.

Your dog is more independent, more interested in the world and more easily distracted than they were a few months ago.

So instead of thinking:

“They know this, they’re just ignoring me.”

Try thinking:

“They know this here… but maybe they’re not ready to do it there yet.”

That shift can change how you approach the whole situation.

If you’re currently raising a teenage dog and saying “BUT YOU KNOW THIS!” at least once a day… you are very much not alone. 😂

Your adolescent dog spots another dog across the road.... at first, they’re just looking, it's no big deal!

Then they look a little longer, their body changes, they start leaning forward and suddenly getting their attention back becomes much harder.

That’s the bit I want owners to start noticing because there’s usually a stage BEFORE the barking, pulling, whining or bouncing around starts.

We often call it fixation.

That sounds like a very dog-trainery word, but it simply means your dog has become so focused on something that they’re struggling to look away from it.
And once they’re really stuck on it, asking them to suddenly “listen” can be a much bigger ask.

So rather than waiting until your dog is completely overexcited and then trying to control the behaviour…
I’d rather help them earlier.
Can they notice the dog?
Can they still check back in with you?
Can you help them move away before that interest turns into frustration?

That’s what I mean by focus before fixation.

We’re not teaching adolescent dogs that they’re never allowed to look at anything exciting, we’re helping them learn that they can notice something interesting without it becoming the ONLY thing that matters.

That’s a huge part of what we work on in my adolescent classes too.

Winnie 💕

Winnie's hunans wanted help with her biting and not jumping up and managing it particularly around children and visitors.

She is also coming along to my puppy classes to get learning recall, drop, leave it and lots more 🥰

Well done Winnie! 🥰
