When a Training Plan Hits a Wall

We were completely stumped recently with a service team in training. We'd looked at every variable, but the dog's progress just wasn't matching up with what we expected for their public access work. After going back through the routine step by step, we finally caught the missing 🧩 puzzle piece: the handler hadn't mentioned that the dog was also spending time at a high-energy dog park twice a week. That single detail completely altered how the dog was processing their environment and managing arousal levels during working hours.

Working service and therapy dogs don't have an off switch when it comes to learning. They're constantly absorbing details from every environment they visit, whether they're on duty or off. Daily activities like visits to off-leash areas, daycares, or hectic public settings all shape your dog's overall energy, focus, and impulse control. That's why sharing the full picture of your dog's daily routine with your trainer helps ensure every experience supports your team's goals.

Once we accounted for those extra outings and adjusted the routine, the shift was immediate. The team went from struggling with distractions to moving together with quiet composure in just a few days. As you prepare your Thanksgiving feast, keep in mind that many holiday staples aren't safe for your dog. A few easy steps will help keep your dog happy, healthy, and comfortable while you celebrate.

First, let's talk about holiday foods you should keep out of reach. Cooked turkey bones can easily splinter and hurt your dog's stomach. Onions, garlic, and leeks are toxic in any form, whether raw, cooked, or mixed into gravy. You'll also want to skip sharing fatty skin or rich gravy, as high-fat foods can cause painful stomach trouble. Lastly, keep all desserts far away from your dog—chocolate, raisins, and artificial sweeteners like xylitol are dangerous toxins.

Don't worry, you can still give your dog a delicious treat! A spoonful of plain canned pumpkin is always a hit—just make sure it's not pumpkin pie mix. You can also share a bit of plain, skinless cooked turkey or turkey organs, or toss them simple snacks like plain steamed green beans and plain cooked sweet potatoes.

Managing visitors is just as important as watching the food. When guests start arriving, assign a family member to greet people, or set up a baby gate near the entrance. Keeping your dog on a leash or settled comfortably on a mat will stop any sudden bolt for the front door during the excitement.

I got tired of watching people struggle with their dogs.

I knew what was possible for a person and their dog. I knew if people just had a few right pieces of information, they could have the same great team experience I have with my own dog.

There's so much noise in dog training. So many opinions. I've read them all and seen them all. I've even tried things that didn't turn out well. All those bumps in the road with my dogs? Now they help me keep you from making the same mistakes. That way, you get to a real working partnership a whole lot faster.

There's nothing like that moment when you and your dog click. There's a real flow, a shared understanding, and clear communication. That's totally within reach if you're open to doing the work. When I work with clients, the lightbulb goes off for the dog, but it also goes off for the owner. Honestly, watching that happen for the person is the best part.
