Welcome River!

Meet River, aptly named when he was picked up by Animal Control while having a grand old time playing in a river in the countryside. River likely belonged to someone but no one came to look for him. Feeling rather insulted and a bit sad, he jumped into the arms of his foster mum and decided to look for a new, better home with Hopeful Tails.

On his best behaviour in quest of that home, he became friends with the resident dogs, behaved nicely in the house, went to bed happily without complaints in his crate and made sure to give every human he met his best greeting.

River certainly looks like a Border Collie with a bit of good old farm dog mixed in. He's smart, eager to please and very focused on his people and would benefit from ongoing training as enrichment. Having come from a rural setting, we are looking for a similar home where there is lots of room to run and play and another dog in the home would be bonus.

River has not been cat tested. He currently lives on a horse farm with two older dogs and they get along fine, although River's enthusiasm is sometimes a bit much for them. River is a quicker learner though and gets the message.

River is new to balls and toys but is quickly catching on. He actually thinks it's more fun to pick up his water dish with water in it and parade around the yard. In the house, he does well in his crate, sleeping through the night and will even go into it on his own when he needs a nap. He still is a little unsettled in the house and will need someone around throughout the day as he has not been left alone other than for short periods.

If you can keep up with River, are familiar with this breed, this is the dog for you. River has only been in foster care for a week, so we are continuing to learn more. Please check back for updates on this lovely dog.

Smoky has been adopted (now Nova!) 🐾

Nova has found her perfect match with Joshua, Paige, and their two adventurous kids. Already a lively, dog-loving family, they share their home with Mika, their 1-year-old husky, and always knew a second dog would one day join the pack. That “someday” has officially arrived.

Life with this crew is anything but still. Daily walks, a dog park just three minutes away, and endless games of fetch and backyard zoomies mean Nova will never run out of fun or companionship. Mika is ready to be her built-in best friend, partner in play, and co-explorer of all things exciting.

Beyond the neighbourhood, the family thrives outdoors, discovering new trails, exploring parks, and heading off on camping trips and hikes. Silent Lake Provincial Park is already a favourite destination, and Nova is in for many more adventures under open skies.

A huge thank you to everyone, including Northern Reach Network, and foster family Sean and Sally, who helped bring Nova to her forever home.

Shadow has been adopted! 🐾

At just 16 weeks old, Shadow is a beautiful black Lab cross with a playful spark and a heart already tuned to her people. Full of puppy curiosity, she’s the kind of pup who follows you from room to room, equal parts explorer and devoted sidekick.

For Sharilyn and Kevin, everything has lined up just right. Sharilyn’s work-from-home days mean Shadow will grow up with steady companionship and guidance. Kevin, home part of the week and always ready to move, is set to take her on walks, spend outdoor time, and have all the adventures a young Lab mix dreams about.

Their kids, 12 and 8, are thrilled to welcome her. They’ve grown up around dogs and are ready to jump in, helping with playtime, training, and the wonderfully chaotic art of raising a puppy who thinks socks are treasure.

Thank you so much to Northern Reach Network and Cindy foster family for bringing Shadow from the north to her furever family!

A big welcome to Sharilyn, Kevin, the children and Shadow to our growing Hopeful Tails, Happy Tails family! Please share some love for Shadow and her new family!

We have wonderful news - Neela has been adopted!

Neela has found a beautiful home with Adrienne, Jonathan, and their 12-year-old daughter, a family whose lives already carry the gentle rhythm of loving dogs deeply and well.

Her name, Neela, means blue sapphire in Sanskrit, a perfect reflection of her striking eyes and the quiet, luminous presence she brings with her.

Their beloved Duggan, a kind-hearted black lab who lived an incredible 16.5 years, began as Adrienne’s brother’s puppy before becoming fully theirs. He grew into a steady, soulful companion, especially tender with their daughter from the very beginning, quietly checking on her at bedtime. More recently, they also opened their home to Adrienne’s father’s senior lab, offering comfort and care through his final chapter. This is a family that understands dogs not just as pets, but as true family.

Adrienne, a professor, works primarily from home, with only occasional short trips to campus, while Jonathan is just minutes away at work. Neela will have consistent companionship and a steady, reassuring routine.

Life here is active, outdoorsy, and full of simple joys. Neela will enjoy at least three walks a day, runs through High Park, playtime in the backyard, and adventures to waterfront parks and summer days at the beach up north. From family bike rides to backyard laughter and outdoor hockey moments, she’ll be woven into every part of their days.

Drawn to her unique lab/husky mix and her lovely nature, Adrienne and Jonathan knew Neela was the one. Thoughtful and intentional from the start, they’re ready to meet her energy with movement, her intelligence with engagement, and her heart with deep care.

Thank you to Adrienne and Jonathan for welcoming Neela home and we welcome you all to the Hopeful Tails Happy Tails family. Please share some love for Neela and her forever family!

Happy Trails Scout! Boots has been adopted (now Scout!)

Scout has found a caring and experienced home with Donna and Gary, a couple who took their time, asked all the right questions, and made sure they were truly ready to welcome another dog into their lives.

After recently saying goodbye to their beloved “mini pony” of a dog, a big, spirited GSD/Malamute from Manitoulin Island, their home has felt a little quieter. He was a smart, high-energy boy with a knack for mischief and a love of attention, and they met him with patience, structure, and plenty of exercise. That experience has shaped exactly the kind of home they now offer Scout.

Donna, a longtime figure skating coach, and Gary, who works from home three days a week, have built a routine that ensures Scout will have companionship, engagement, and consistent care. Their days already include morning walks of 45 minutes to an hour, with flexibility for midday outings when needed. Their daughter is also close by and ready to step in for dog-sitting support.

Scout is stepping into a home that understands energetic, intelligent dogs and meets them with patience, structure, and love. It’s a fresh chapter filled with steady guidance, meaningful activity, and a family ready to embrace him fully.

Thank you to Northern Reach Network and foster family Sean and Sally, for their roles in bringing Scout to his home!

Thank you to Donna and Gary for opening their hearts to Scout. Welcome to the Hopeful Tails, Happy Tails family!

🐾 From the Brink to Beloved – Meet Dov (now Brody) 🐾

Just weeks ago, this beautiful 4-year-old German Shepherd was a stray… alone, out of time, and hours away from euthanasia. A desperate plea went out to save him—and thanks to the kindness and quick action of an incredible community, his story took a very different turn.

Courtney of Trauzzi & Co in Guelph stepped up immediately, offering to board him and buy us the precious time we needed to find the right foster. That act of generosity changed everything.

Enter Jim & Karen—lifelong German Shepherd lovers with extensive training experience—who opened their hearts and home to this deserving boy. Now lovingly called Brody, he’s settling into country life like he was always meant to be there.

With acres of space to explore, a safe place to rest his head, and a playful new sister, Nova, by his side, Brody is thriving. His personality is shining through more every day—loyal, intelligent, and full of life.

This is what rescue is all about: second chances, teamwork, and believing that every dog deserves a future.

Special thanks to Kim Jesty of Hamilton Animal Services who works so very hard to find placements for these deserving dogs in the shelter.

Please welcome Brody and his parents to the Hopeful Tails family!

Happy Tails Porter! 🐾

Porter, the second pup fostered by Michelle and David didn't have to go far to find his family!

Maggie had grown up with plenty of rescue dogs, and she, Fulvio and daughter Liv recently lost their rescue Luca, and just started looking to adopt again. And suddenly their neighbours mentioned they were having some foster pups arrive. Within a week, they met the two pups and fell in love with Porter, now Yoshi.

We are so excited for Yoshi as he will have a fenced yard, within the 300 plus acres in Northumberland County, and enjoy plenty of outings as their canine companions go everywhere with them-into town, visiting family members who have dogs and will have plenty of play dates with sister Lucy, a short distance away.

Often serendipity plays a role in where many of our pups end up and we couldn't be happier.

Many thanks to foster parents Michele and David and to the Northern Reach Network for all these do for these northern dogs. Please share some love for Yoshi and his family!

Happy Tails Milo! 🐾

Milo was a very popular boy and he stole many hearts on his journey.

Joanne and Justin, a recently married couple, both grew up with dogs are were very eager to add a rescue pup to their family. Coincidentally they lived a few blocks away and offered Milo a similar lifestyle that he had grown to love in his foster home. He went to live with his new family as a foster to adopt, waiting for his neuter appointment and officially was adopted this week. This athletic boy keeps everyone busy and elicits joy and laughter daily with his silly antics.

Many thanks to the Northern Dog Project for entrusting us with his care. Please share some love for Milo and his new parents!

A warm welcome to Peanut!

Peanut’s story is just beginning—and we can already tell it’s going to be a special one. This spunky little 1-year-old Chihuahua mix made her way to us from a remote community in Northern Quebec, arriving just last weekend. Now, she’s settling into foster life and starting to show us who she is.

At just 8 kg, Peanut may be petite, but she’s full of playful energy and curiosity. She’s already proving to be a social butterfly—getting along beautifully with other dogs, coexisting peacefully with the resident cat, and even taking in the sights and sounds around horses without a worry.

Her days are filled with adventure as she joins her foster mom at work, where she enjoys space to explore and plenty of opportunities to make new dog friends. It’s clear Peanut thrives when she’s part of the action.

We’re still getting to know this sweet girl, but here’s what we love so far:

🐾 Spunky, playful personality
🐾 Dog-friendly and cat-friendly
🐾 Confident in new environments
🐾 Social and loving being around others

Next up, Peanut will be visiting one of our partner vets to be spayed, microchipped, and receive her booster vaccines—setting her up for a healthy future.

You can learn more about Peanut and submit an application on our website: https://hopefultailsdogrescue.com/available-dogs/peanut-2/
