Put them to work!

Some working breeds of dogs thrive when they have a job to do.
If you are fortunate enough to get them involved in something like search and rescue, therapy programs or even first responding work, great.
But for the rest of us regular dog owners its easier to slap a back pack on them.
Often you can see a dogs demeanor shift into work mode. It may even help distract them from habitual behaviors like some forms of reactivity.
Plus think about the extra energy it will burn off!

Dog bites.

They can be serious, they hurt and they can be scary, Especially depending on the severity of the attack and the breed of dog.

Dog bites are categorized into six levels. Level one being no skin contact and level six being injury, mutilation and resulting in death.

Dogs will often give some form of fore warning before an attack. Although most dog owners may not recognize the subtle body language and can leave them feeling like the dog bit without warning.

Some dogs have triggers for aggressive/ fear based bites. Perhaps they are possessive over food or toys, Or perhaps they are fearful of something as simple as a plaid woods jacket or a vacuum.

Trying to figure out what their triggers are is what an aggression trainer tries to do. Although to be honest, a lot of times it can be difficult to solve.

Once a dog has learned it can bite to get what it wants, it becomes a dangerous animal. It should be taken seriously and the owner should know when to seek professional help.
ESPECIALLY IF THERE ARE CHILDREN IN THE HOME.

As a trainer, it may come to a point where the only responsible advice I can give is euthenizing the animal. Of course rehoming may be an option however, with certain cases of aggression, the only appropriate thing to do is put the dog down.
It is literally a matter of public safety.

Telling a client they need to consider putting their dog down is really difficult to do, but necessary.

Muzzles, baby gates, leashes and understanding environmental control are all essential tools in handling aggressive behavior to avoid bites and attacks.

If you or someone you know has a dog with a bite history or is starting to show signs of aggressive behavior, reach out!

Timber will always let you know its breakfast or supper time. Always.

It is essential to implement a strict feeding schedule for dogs in training. By doing so you create a strong motivation to work for food and a focus on you as a handler.
Food is the easiest and most effective way to train canines.

How to start a feeding schedule:

Food goes in the bowl, make your dog sit.
Place food bowl down for them.

Give them 10-15 mins to make up their mind if they are hungry.

After that time, remove the bowl until the next feeding time, be it lunch or supper.

Avoid giving them extras like treats etc between feeding times. Use treats or even a meal allotment for training sessions.

Avoid feeling guilty or sad if your dog didnt eat its meal. Some dogs may go a couple days without eating. Especially stubborn ones who have been spoiled with high value free feeding situations.

Dogs will not let themselves starve. Eventually they will follow their gut and eat.

Always keep water available while implementing a feeding schedule.

For dogs who are suffering from aggression or fear based anxieties, for example, a feeding schedule is the FIRST STEP to rehabilitation training.

*ADOPTED*

Hello Everyone,

A very kind human sponsored my adoption fee for me! 😁

My name is Duke, and I’m hoping you’ll take a moment to read my story. Each day, I watch families come and go from the shelter, and every night, I curl up alone, wishing that just once, someone would see my picture and see me as their best friend waiting.
I’ve been here for over 20 days now—long enough to know the routine, long enough for my heart to ache a little more each evening when the lights go out and the quiet sets in. The staff and volunteers are amazing, and they’ve filled my days with kindness, belly rubs, and walks in the sunshine. Still, when the doors close, I can’t help but dream of something more: a home of my own and a family to love me.

I imagine the simple joys—dozing by your feet, chasing after a ball in the backyard, or maybe even curling up on the couch beside you after a long day. I’d love to have my very own dog bed, but what I want most is the warmth of someone who calls me theirs.
Everyone here says I’m a handsome guy, and I’ve got the brains to match my good looks. Sometimes, I get carried away in play—I just get so excited! With a little positive reinforcement training (I’ll do anything for treats!), I know I’ll make you proud.

If you’re searching for a loyal companion—a hiking buddy, a snuggle partner, a devoted best friend—maybe I’m the one you’ve been looking for. Please reach out to the shelter and ask about Duke. I’ll be here, hopeful and waiting, ready to show you all the love I have to give.

I am able to go home with doggy friends but not kitty friends. I do great with children of all ages I just don't know my size sometimes :)

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE šŸŽ„šŸ„°
