Kennel cough!

We wanted to make everyone aware that kennel cough and other respiratory illnesses are circulating among dogs in Nanaimo. We have had more cases pop up here. While kennel cough is often mild, we've become aware of two more serious cases involving pneumonia.

Please keep an eye out for symptoms such as coughing, sneezing, nasal discharge, unusual tiredness, or changes in appetite. We also encourage everyone to watch for more serious signs, such as difficulty breathing, worsening symptoms, or extreme lethargy, as respiratory illnesses can sometimes progress to pneumonia.

If your dog is showing any of these symptoms, please keep them home from daycare and contact your veterinarian for guidance. Dogs must be symptom-free for at least 2 weeks before returning to daycare. Your vet may recommend further testing or treatment, including antibiotics if a bacterial infection or pneumonia is suspected. This is especially important for dogs who are immunocompromised or have other underlying health conditions.

We just want everyone to be aware of what's going around and keep an eye on their pups. Thank you for helping us keep our daycare community informed! ❤️

The video is just an audio example of what a wetter, deeper cough associated with pneumonia can sound like. Kennel cough can sound similar, but is often more of a dry, hacking or honking cough.
