EXPECTATIONS FOR TRAINING DOG AGGRESSIVE DOGS π€
You canβt change temperament. Anyone claiming they can is either extremely inexperienced with behavioural dogs or just telling you what you want to hear (to swipe your credit card).
So, what can you do?
1. Establish expectations. You donβt mess with other dogs, and I donβt allow them to mess with you.
2. Install impulse control and create a dog that thinks before action. Enter PROPER, REAL, RELIABLE, on and off leash obedience training. Not fluff commands that only work when the dog feels like it.
3. Exposure and generalization. Get the dog out, seeing lots of pictures, and seeing the value in choosing different options (engaging with the handler, structured play, obedience, etc.). This creates a dog confident in what they SHOULD do and able to lean into the handler.
There is no secret to this stuff, no miracles, just real practical steps and habits that create a dog that people passing by wonβt believe is not social, even if you tell them.
