“We need to go beyond operant and classical conditioning.”

WTF? 🤔

As in: What’s The Function? (Yes of course that’s what I mean 🤣🙀🌈🦄)

But before we go “beyond”, have we actually explored what’s already here?

Respondent and operant processes interacting. Motivating operations changing what matters in the moment. Verbal behaviour influencing what we notice, say and do. And selection by consequences operating across three levels: the species, the individual and the culture.

And that’s before we’ve really explored the individual’s learning history and the conditions under which behaviour occurs.

That’s not a small box to climb out of. It’s a whole ecosystem. 🌱🐺🐬🐕🌈🫶🏽🦄✨🌻

Now, I’m all for questioning, challenging and developing our science. Please do! That’s how we learn.

But there’s a rather important distinction worth making:

Have we reached the limits of our science, or the limits of how we’ve been applying it?

Because those are two very different things.

So next time something appears to be “beyond” conditioning, perhaps we could start with a little curiosity.

What’s happening? Under what conditions? What’s the history?

And, of course…

WTF? What’s The Function? 🤔✨🌈☀️🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️
