RAT BAIT WARNING 🐀🩸

This little sausage dog found some delicious rat bait snacks unbeknownst to her owner. The only signs that suggested she was unwell was a bit of lethargy and heavier breathing.

On arrival to the clinic the team took one look at her pale gums and immediately drew some bloods to run a clotting time. The results were off the charts. An X-ray revealed she was bleeding into her chest which was severely restricting her ability to breathe. Almost a quarter of her entire blood volume was lost in her chest cavity alone!!

Immediately she was treated with a whole blood transfusion and received multiple plasma transfusions over the course of two days to replace the lost blood volume and essential clotting factors needed to control the ongoing bleeding.

We are very relieved to report that this little sausage has made a full recovery. She’s now back home, continuing oral treatment and being kept under some very watchful eyes (see last photo 🥰).

Signs of rat bait poisoning can include:
🐾 Pale gums
🐾 Lethargy or weakness
🐾 Rapid or laboured breathing
🐾 Bleeding from the gums, nose, prepuce or v***a
🐾 Bruising
🐾 A swollen or distended abdomen
🐾 Blood in the urine or faeces
🐾 Increased thirst

⚠️ Rat bait poisoning can be life-threatening, and signs may not appear for several days after ingestion. If you know or suspect your pet has eaten rat bait, don’t wait for symptoms to develop — contact your vet as soon as possible.

And remember to keep rat bait well out of reach of curious noses… particularly hungry little sausage dogs! 🐶🌭

Spring has sprung, and with it comes one of our busiest times of year in clinic. 🌻🌸🌱🌼

During Spring time and the warmer weather there are a few extra things to keep an eye on for your pets:

* Fleas & ticks — warmer weather means increased parasite activity, so make sure preventatives are up to date.
* Grass seeds — particularly important for our long haired dogs. Check paws, ears, eyes and between toes after walks.
* Allergies — increased pollen and grasses can trigger itchy skin, paws and ears.
* Ear infections — heat, humidity and allergies can contribute to recurring ear problems.
* Snake bites — snakes become more active as temperatures rise, particularly around long grass and bushland.
* Bee & wasp stings — these don’t just hurt humans!
* Toxic plants & flowers — spring gardening can introduce plants that are dangerous to dogs and cats.
