The 46th annual Bain Fallon Memorial Lectures were held in Melbourne last week and several of our VCC veterinarians and one final year student were contributors to multiple sessions of this large equine veterinary conference.
Dr Josette Fretton (equine surgery resident) presented a clinical poster on aural haematomas in horses (9 cases) while Dr Naomi Kirkwood (equine medicine resident) presented a research abstract on the pharmacokinetics amd pharmacodynamics of ertugliflozin in horses. Congratulations Naomi on winning the EVA Young Member prize for her abstract.
Final year student Tanisha Cragg presented a research poster on the prevalence of Pseudomonas cultured from Thoroughbred mare cl****al swabs in Eastern Australia while our Senior Lecturer in Equine Medicine Dr Amy Lovett presented with Tanisha and was also a judge for a section of the scientific poster presentations.

We say goodbye to a very special member of the VCC family.

For many years, Joe served as one of our equine blood donors, quietly helping to save the lives of countless horses in need of emergency blood transfusions. His contributions supported critically ill foals and horses facing life-threatening conditions. While he never met the animals he helped, his generosity made a profound difference to so many horses and their families.

Finding a suitable blood donor horse for an equine hospital is no simple task. Donor horses must meet strict health, temperament, and blood-type requirements, making suitable candidates exceptionally rare. Their role is invaluable—not only for the collection of whole blood during emergencies but also for the production of plasma, an essential component used in the treatment of many equine patients.

We are grateful that we have since welcomed a new donor horse, Jimmy, to continue this important work, ensuring that future patients can receive the blood or plasma they need.

Jimmy will be introduced properly at a later date. For now we just say thank you Joe, for your 20+ years of service. You will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.
