⚠️ H5 Bird Flu Alert in Australia ⚠️
H5 avian influenza (bird flu) has been detected in Australia, with confirmed cases in Western Australia. While there are currently no confirmed detections in Victoria, it is important to remain vigilant and promptly report any sick or dead wildlife, including birds and marine mammals, to help protect our wildlife, pets and farming communities.
If you come across sick or dead birds or other wildlife:
🚫 Do NOT touch the injured or dead birds as it is contagious and can be spread to humans
🐕 Keep pets away and keep dogs on a leash, especially around beaches, wetlands, and areas where wild birds gather
📸 If it is safe to do so, record what you see with photos or videos
📝 Note the date, time, accurate location, and what you've observed
📞 Report it immediately to the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline: 1800 675 888
Bird flu can affect:
Seabirds
Wild birds that are common to the area
Pet birds
Waterbirds such as ducks
Birds of prey
Black swans
Penguins
Pelicans
Chickens
Marine mammals such as seals
Humans
Keeping your distance and reporting sightings helps authorities respond quickly and monitor any spread.
