Meet Kayla and her gorgeous OTTB jumper 🤎
When I first met this pair, they were struggling with some pretty intense rushing, bolting, refusals and a real lack of control when jumping.
Kayla had been recommended a single-jointed four-ring Dutch gag, a bit that can create significant leverage and pressure on multiple areas of the horse’s head. Combined with a single-jointed mouthpiece, this can be quite a strong setup, particularly for a horse already showing signs of tension, rushing and resistance. Stronger bits aren’t always the answer, and sometimes they can make the underlying problems worse!
What I absolutely loved was that Kayla wasn’t comfortable using it, so she took the initiative to organise a professional bit fitting. She was so kind, open-minded and willing to learn about what would make Prince happier and more comfortable.
After finding a more suitable bit, making a few tack adjustments and working on some changes to Kayla’s riding, these two are already making incredible progress!
We’ve gone right back to basics in our lessons, focusing on small jumps, rhythm, relaxation, confidence and rebuilding their partnership. They are an absolute pleasure to teach, and I’m so excited to see where this journey takes them!
Have a horse you’re struggling with or simply want to build a better partnership with? I’d love to help!
