Successful racehorse turned eventer Call me Coldie is a very sensitive boy. Owner Mia's coach reached out to me about bitting as he's very strong cross country but Mia had been finding some damage to his bars when bitting up.

We explored bitting options with no real change and continued concern around the potential damage caused. We then tried The Equemist Australia Combination Jump bridle. We've left his dressage bit that he's happy in and added some nose pressure via the combination bridle.

Last weekend Coldie had his second 2* start at Shirley Heights Horse Trials and ran 7th as well as winning the OTT section. The feedback from Mia was "AMAZING, he was absolutely fantastic on XC!!'. I'm delighted Mia took the time to find a solution for Coldie and HUGE congratulations!

⭐️Bit and Bridle consult appointments are now available for October⭐️

October is nearly as crazy as September was in terms of my availability. If you're keen for a fit of either bit or bridle, please contact me as soon as possible so I can guarantee you a spot!

Why is professional bit fitting so important? The bit is one of your primary communication tools. If you have issues with leaning, behind the contact, tongue activity, head tossing, or you’re just feeling like the connection isn’t as good as you’d like this is your horse communicating they’re not as comfortable as they should be and they can’t ‘hear’ your aids clearly. Bit selection is about matching design to anatomy, training level, and rider influence to allow the combination to communicate effectively and comfortably.

Correct bridle fitting is just as important as bitting. I'm able to do full bridle fits, health checks on your current bridle and answer any questions you have. I carry both The Equemist and Flexible Fit bridles on hand to fit but I'm able to assist with all brands.

🐴 Service Areas
Listed locations include surrounding areas and towns en route to and from the Ballarat region. If your area isn’t mentioned, please get in touch — I regularly travel across Victoria, with minimum numbers required for extended trips.

🐴 What to Expect
Consultations run for different times depending on the service chosen. All services are conducted one-on-one.
For the most accurate assessment, horses are ideally ridden. However, I also offer: standing assessments and pre-starting fittings.
Following your consult, you’ll receive a comprehensive written report for your records.

🐴 Support Beyond the Fit
I take the guesswork out of sourcing. Once we determine the most suitable option of bit and/or bridle, I am able to supply certain brands or I assist in locating your selected bit through a reputable retailer.

If you have questions, please don’t hesitate to ask. Please message the page for all bookings.

PSA for those with 4WDs or SUVs where your spare wheel is located underneath the vehicle.

Last Thursday I was on my way to a booking in a 100kph section of road when a wheel came off a vehicle well ahead of me. In a single lane each way and no real run off the road the only choice I had was to hold the car straight and hope to God I hit on a down bounce and not have it go through the windscreen. It went OVER the car in front of me and fortunately hit me on a down bounce. The other options don't bear thinking about. I want to KISS my serious bull bar which took the brunt of the hit.

Please check your spare wheel is secure. This was no one's fault, it's clearly just worked loose, unsurprising given the state of Victorian country roads!

Which way does the port go?

It might seem like a simple question, but it's one of the most common fitting errors I see, even from experienced owners.

A ported bit only functions as intended when it's fitted in the correct orientation. Turn it around, and you've completely changed the way it sits in the horse's mouth, the distribution of pressure and, most importantly, how the horse experiences the bit.

Ported bits are generally fitted to give the horse some relief over the tongue. A sensitive horse may react very badly to having a ported but placed upside down and then ridden.

It's an easy mistake to make and it's exactly why I created the FREE Bitting Orientation Guide.

The guide includes clear photographs and explanations around which way common bit styles should face, mistakes to avoid and simple checks you can do before every ride.

Please don't lunge off a bit...

Lunging a horse off the bit is something that’s considered common practice for many horse owners. Unfortunately, it’s a practice that carries significant risk.

A bit is designed to be used with reins from the rider’s position when mounted. When a lunge line is attached to a bit the mechanics of the action of the bit change completely.

The line of action from the bit to the hand is different depending on where the hand is placed. This means the distribution of pressures within the mouth are very different for the horse when you compare the mounted rider position to that of someone standing in the middle of a lunging circle.

There are a variety of ways of attaching the lunge line. All give confusing and conflicting forces in the mouth when the handler is in the middle of a circle and pressure is applied. We also need to take into account the length of a lunge line which will compound those forces depending on how long it is and if it is clipped through a second fixed point on the saddle/girth/surcingle, creating a pulley which further increases forces.

Let me be clear. If a horse pulls away, spooks, has a ‘bounce’, is working on his or her ‘bad’ side and you’re applying pressure through the lunge rein the associated forces applied to the mouth and head are enormous. The associated reactions, in particular for young or green horses, can cause serious injury to both horse and handler.

Results can be anything from discomfort and bruising (often unseen), to catastrophic injuries including lacerations and partial or complete tongue injuries as shown in the accompanying photographs.

Safer and kinder alternatives include attaching the lunge line to a correctly fitted cavesson or using a halter either on its own or over your bridle if you’re wishing to use side reins.

Just because something has “always been done” doesn’t mean we shouldn’t question its safety, comfort and understanding for the horse. Part of our responsibility as horse owners and trainers is to make informed decisions on their behalf. We’ve learned so much about bits, the forces they apply, and the effect the horse’s tongue and associated structures have on their entire body. We need to analyse our own practices and ensure they’re still the absolute best we can do for horses in our care.

*Thank you to my clients for allowing me to use their images and for others to learn from their terrible experience. I’m pleased to say their horse completely recovered and is ridden both bitted and bitless.
