Did you know that while castrations are one of the most frequently performed elective surgical procedures, they are also associated with a high complication rate?

A 2024 study compiled and analysed the complication rate and risk factors associated with castrations.

Common complications were-
🚩 swelling (up to 70% of cases)
🚩 infection
🚩 excessive bleeding
🚩 evisceration
🚩 continued stallion-like behaviour

There are a number of ways that these risks can be reduced. Follow along to find out how you can prepare your c**t for his big day!

This beautiful boy recently came into the care of horse_shepherd. He was born with a congenital deformity called Wry Nose causing lateral deviation of the muzzle and misalignment of the jaws.
This results in poor dental occlusion, abnormal tooth wear, and the development of dental overgrowths and sharp enamel points. Regular dental care every 6 months is required to maintain comfort and effective chewing.

Unfortunately, Twister also had a diastema with feed packing around one tooth which took a bit of time to clear. Thank goodness for a crush and headsling to make this a bit easier on Twister (and me)!

Sunshine and smiles for this ponies dental day☀️🐴

Dental disease is one of the most common health issues we see in horses, yet many show few signs until problems become advanced.

Digital radiography now available on farm or in clinic!

Radiographs (x-rays) are one of the most valuable tools we have to accurately diagnose and manage a wide range of conditions, from subtle lameness issues to more complex problems like laminitis and joint disease. They allow us to help take the guesswork out of treatment and give your horse the best chance at a successful outcome.

They’re also incredibly useful when working alongside your farrier, allowing precise, informed trimming and shoeing decisions tailored to your horse’s individual needs.

With portable digital radiography, we can bring this technology directly to you — providing fast results and clear answers, wherever your horse is located.

📍 Early diagnosis = better outcomes
📍 Clear answers = targeted treatment
📍 Better collaboration = better results

If your horse isn’t quite right, or you want a deeper understanding of their hoof health, get in touch to book a visit.

Happy International Women’s Day!

I’m lucky to have so many strong, talented women in my life who have encouraged and supported me while I start this business.

But special mention goes to those at HSP Advanced Equine and Horse Shepherd Equine Sanctuary. When you love what you do, you never work a day 🐎
