They may look like big, fully grown chickens.

But many of these birds are still very young. ❤️🐔

In the meat industry, chickens like these are known as “broilers” - a term used for chickens bred specifically for meat production.

They have been selectively bred to grow incredibly quickly, reaching a large body size in just a matter of weeks.

And that rapid growth comes with consequences.

At sanctuary, we have to be very careful with their diet and weight because their bodies can become too heavy for their legs, joints and organs to comfortably support.

So meals are thoughtfully prepared and carefully managed.

Today’s menu? Lettuce. 🥬

Some of the broiler chickens who come to Farm Animal Rescue have fallen from transport trucks. Others have been found by kind people who happened to be in the right place at exactly the right time.
However they arrive, life here looks very different.

They have soft straw to rest in.
Space to move around.
Fresh food.
The company of other chickens.

And people watching carefully to make sure they are as comfortable and healthy as possible.

Sadly, because these chickens have been bred to grow so rapidly, many do not live long lives, even with the very best care.

We cannot change the bodies they were bred into.

But while they are here, we can give them something they were never bred for at all:
a life that belongs to them .🥬🤍

Rocky was supposed to die before he ever really had the chance to live.

He was only a couple of months old.

Rocky came from a backyard chicken breeder, where unwanted young roosters were killed by cervical dislocation - their necks broken - because there simply wasn’t a place for them.
Rocky went through the same ordeal.

Believed to be dead, he was thrown into a firepit-type burner with the others, with the pit to be lit the next day.

But the next day, something extraordinary happened.

Rocky walked back over to the breeder.

He had survived.

The breeder decided that Rocky deserved to live, despite ridicule from family and friends for sparing him.

On 28 May 2016, Rocky arrived at sanctuary.

More than ten years later, it is almost impossible to comprehend how close he came to never having this life at all.

Today, Rocky has a very special role. He watches over a small group of special-care hens - girls who have arrived carrying broken bodies and sad stories of their own.

He stays close, keeps an eye on his ladies and seems to carry out his duties with enormous rooster pride.
And yes… he is also exceptionally handsome. 🐓❤️

Rocky’s story is also the story of countless roosters. Whenever chickens are bred for eggs, including in backyards, male chicks are born too. Hens are wanted because they lay eggs. Roosters usually aren’t.
There are only so many homes for them, and at any one time thousands of roosters are looking for somewhere safe to go.

It is one reason we are uncomfortable with breeding chickens for egg production, particularly commercially. Behind the hens whose eggs are valued are brothers who are often considered to have little value at all.

Rocky was once one of those unwanted boys.

Today, he is a protector, companion, sanctuary character and a rooster with a very special place in our hearts.

Sometimes we watch him caring for his little flock and think about that tiny rooster who somehow survived.

More than a decade later, we are still astonished that he is here.

We are so very glad you stayed, Rocky. ❤️🐓

We can’t know exactly what they’re thinking or feeling as they take in this unfamiliar world. So, for now, we’re asking nothing of them.

We’re simply giving Lizzy, Emily, Hannah, and Katya, rescued from the dairy industry, what we can: space, time, good food, fresh water, gentle care, and peace.

There’s no rush to trust. No expectation that they should immediately understand that life is different now.
They can take all the time they need.

And slowly, we hope they’ll learn through the ordinary rhythm of each day that the food will keep coming, the water will always be there, nobody will ask anything more of their bodies, and this quiet place is theirs.
They are safe.

They are home. 🐄💛

The first time Coco asked us to babysit George, she didn’t bother with a polite request. She broke through the fence.

Coco lived on the property next door with Bambi and Boris. Not long after giving birth to George, she made her way through the fence and left her baby safely with our herd.

It felt as though this tired new mum knew exactly where to come for help - and that she desperately needed a little time off from looking after her calf.

Eventually, when Coco and George needed a more secure future, they came to live permanently at Farm Animal Rescue on 1 October 2017.

George arrived as a sweet, fluffy little calf and quickly became a favourite. His mum, Coco, remained by his side. Nine years later, George is no longer the little ball of fluff who first captured our hearts. But beneath his much larger exterior, he is every bit as gentle and affectionate.

Watch him soaking up affection from Brad with the same sweetness he had as a baby. George was easy to love then. Now we love him even more now.

Happy ninth rescue anniversary, beautiful George. You arrived with your mum, grew up surrounded by your family, and have known safety and love ever since.

Our pasture is no longer growing — and 125 animals are now relying on store-bought feed.

We were told the rain was coming. We desperately needed it. Instead, the rain didn't come. The temperatures rose, strong winds stripped moisture from the soil, and the pasture has deteriorated so quickly that it is no longer producing enough food for the animals at Farm Animal Rescue.

**Every one of our 125 animals is now relying on feed that we have to buy.**

For a sanctuary our size, that is a huge and very sudden increase in our costs.

And this is happening at the same time as we are dealing with the other parts of our **Triple Sanctuary Emergency**: preparing for the threat of bird flu reaching our sanctuary birds, continuing the veterinary care needed by animals such as Scooter and Hope, and dealing with rising costs for feed, water, transport and everything else required to care for 125 animals.

We need $15,000 to help us get through the next few months. So far, you have helped us raise **$7,571, past half way!**.

I am incredibly grateful to everyone who has already donated. But with the pasture no longer growing, I am more worried than ever about what the coming months will bring.

These 125 animals were rescued from the abuses of the food and textile industries. They came here because we could give them something those industries never could: a safe place to live, proper care and the chance to live out their lives without ever being exploited again.

I need to make sure we can keep that promise.

Lizzy, Emily, Hannah and Katya are settling into sanctuary life.

For their first little while with us, the girls chose to stay close to the barn- the place that felt safest as they took in all the new sights, sounds, and faces around them.

They’ve also discovered that sanctuary life comes with some pretty good meals. These four girls love their food. 🥰

They’ve also started meeting some of the herd. Fiona and Elvis have already wandered over to introduce themselves and have even tried to encourage the newcomers to venture out and join everyone else.

For now, the girls are taking things at their own pace - and that’s perfectly okay.

Every day they seem a little more settled, and a little more at home. We love watching these quiet first steps into their new lives, and we’re looking forward to sharing their progress with you as their personalities emerge and they find their place within the herd.

Two little lambs, Hope and Scooter, arrived at their forever home at Farm Animal Rescue, with immobility issues because of selenium deficiency causing White Muscle Disease.

These two need lots of care, lots of physio, long supervised walks and constant monitoring, but we've seen so much improvement in just the last week we're really hopeful we can give them something close to a normal life.

Farm Animal Rescue faces a triple emergency this year with effects from bird flu, the super-El Nino and huge cost increases driven by hay shortages threatening everything we do.

We need your support to ensure we can bring all 125 rescued animals at sanctuary, including lambs Hope and Scooter, through what will be a very difficult Spring and Summer.
