👁️🐴 Horse Eye Problems - Treat Them as an Emergency ‼️

Eye problems in horses can progress very quickly, and what may initially look like a small issue can become a serious, vision-threatening problem within hours.

Keep an eye out for these clinical signs:

👁️ Squinting or holding the eye closed
💧 Excessive tearing or discharge
🔴 Redness around the eye or eyelids
🌫️ Cloudiness or a blue/white appearance to the eye
🩸 Blood or an unusual appearance inside the eye
🫣 Swelling of the eyelids
🐴 Rubbing the eye on fences, rugs or their legs
☀️ Increased sensitivity to light
👀 A change in the size or appearance of the pupil
⚠️ Sudden changes in vision or behaviour

Some eye conditions, including corneal ulcers, uveitis, foreign bodies and traumatic injuries, require prompt veterinary treatment. Delaying treatment can result in permanent damage to the eye and, in severe cases, loss of vision or the eye itself.

🚨 If your horse has a painful, squinting, cloudy or injured eye, contact your vet as soon as possible, don’t wait and see if it improves.

Please don’t put eye medications into the eye unless advised by your veterinarian. Some medications that are safe for certain eye conditions can make others significantly worse.

🐐 Meet Rod! 🐐

This big guy weighs in at a whopping 101kg! 😲

Rod came into the clinic after developing a urinary blockage (urolithiasis). A serious and painful condition that can occur when urinary stones prevent urination.

Thankfully, Rod responded well to treatment and didn’t require surgery! 🙌❤️ After a few days of hospitalisation and plenty of TLC from our team, Rod is feeling much better and was able to head home today.

We’re sure Rod is very happy to be back home and we’re pretty sure his owners are happy to have their boy back too! 🐐💙

🐾 Meet Indigo! 🐾

Indigo is a gorgeous gentle giant who visited today for her spey and gastropexy 💕🐶

A gastropexy is a surgical procedure where the stomach is attached to the abdominal wall to help prevent it from twisting. This is particularly important in large and deep-chested breeds, which are at greater risk of gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV), a serious and life-threatening emergency.

A gastropexy significantly reduces the risk of the stomach twisting. For dogs at higher risk, we can often perform a gastropexy at the same time as their spey, meaning they only need one anaesthetic and one recovery period ❤️

Indigo has been such a beautiful patient today and has certainly won over the hearts of our team! 💕

🐾 Meet Daisy! 🐾

This gorgeous girl was in at Dayboro Vet Surgery today to have a lump removed 💕🏥

Daisy was a very good girl throughout her visit and procedure. She enjoyed lots of well-earned cuddles 🥰

We’re wishing Daisy a speedy recovery and can’t wait to see her back to her happy self! 🐶❤️

Triple the cuteness! 🐐 🐐🐐

Lifa and Amy recently attended this lovely goat to assist with a difficult delivery of THREE!

With a little veterinary assistance, Mum safely delivered three gorgeous kids. 🐐🐐🐐❤️

Mum and her new arrivals are all doing well. A wonderful outcome for this new little goat family! ❤️

🐶🌿 Meet Harlow! 🌿🐶

Harlow recently had a little too much of a good thing after getting into a large amount of Dynamic Lifter! 😳

She came into the clinic for treatment and was hospitalised on fluids while we monitored her closely. Thankfully, after some TLC and a stay in hospital, Harlow was feeling much brighter and was well enough to head home ❤️

Her cheeky face certainly made it hard to stay mad at her! 🥰🐾

We’re very happy to see Harlow back home and feeling herself again! 💕🐶

🐄 Tick Fever in Cattle — Know the Signs

With cattle in the Dayboro region exposed to cattle ticks, tick fever is an important disease for local cattle owners to be aware of.

Tick fever (bovine babesiosis and anaplasmosis) is spread by cattle ticks and can cause serious illness and death, particularly in cattle that have not previously been exposed.

🐄 Clinical signs can include:
• Fever and depression
• Weakness and reluctance to move
• Reduced appetite
• Pale or yellow (jaundiced) gums and eyes
• Red or dark urine
• Rapid breathing
• Cattle becoming isolated from the herd
• Sudden death in severe cases

💉 Vaccination can help protect susceptible cattle. Tick fever vaccination is particularly important when introducing susceptible cattle into tick-infested areas or before periods of increased tick activity. Vaccination programs should be planned carefully, as the vaccine is a live vaccine and requires appropriate handling and timing.

If you notice cattle showing signs of illness, particularly fever, weakness, pale/yellow mucous membranes or dark urine, contact your vet promptly. Early diagnosis and treatment can make a significant difference 🐄

🐾 Meet Stephen! 👀

Little Stephen came into the Dayboro Vet Surgery after accidentally ingesting ivermectin, a medication commonly found in horse wormers. 🐴💊🐶

Ivermectin toxicity can be a serious problem in dogs, and it’s an easy accident to happen when worming horses. A small amount of wormer dropped on the ground can be very tempting to a curious dog!

Thankfully, Stephen received emergency treatment and supportive care in hospital and has since recovered ❤️

If you’re worming your horses, remember:
- Keep dogs away while worming
- Don’t allow dogs to lick the horse’s mouth or muzzle immediately after worming
- Store horse wormers safely out of reach of pets

If you think your dog may have ingested horse wormer, contact your vet as soon as possible. Early veterinary treatment can make a big difference 🐾❤️
