Princess Kimmi (Yoicks Kimikain) was a pleasure at her first comp back. She had surgery in March on her extensor tendon at the front of her knee and after going through a solid rehab program (if I do say so myself 😂) she is back in normal work and feeling amazing. We did two elementary test on Friday and the 115 CT Saturday at the Off The Track Carnival at Boneo, what a great event showcasing thoroughbreds. Kimmi got herself a ribbon and I got myself some $$ to help pay for this surgery!! Hopefully a quickish turn around for me after getting the hook plate removed from my shoulder today. I will be home tomorrow and the Aqua treadmill and rehab is definitely still running, I’ve got a few ponies in and my priorities are well in check getting them treadmilled before I came in today ha

Thanks Taz for the 📸 and the chat Tazzie Eggins Photography

Kimmi looking and more importantly feeling great post surgery in March on her ‘knee’. She has been rehabbing mostly on the aqua treadmill with ridden work introduced 4 weeks ago and now jumping (this was her second time jumping). Thanks to Cavalli Park for running a great freshman’s on Sunday. We just popped around the 1m. She will be aiming for the Off The Track carnival in September

Kimmi has begun her rehab on the water treadmill. Starting with water height at the bottom of the fetlock and I will build it up to below her carpel joints over her rehab program. We want to start encouraging the extensor she injured to heal in long fibres as opposed to leaving it to heal in a knot of scar tissue, I’m doing this by making her bend that carpel joint compared to flat walking. Alternative would be raised poles (this is not to be confused with a tendon or ligament injury down the back of the leg where we want to limit mobility for a bit longer before introducing exaggerated flexion)

I get asked a lot what the difference between dry treadmill and water treadmill is and there is so many but here is a visual representation. First video is dry, the second is in water, the speed of the belt is the same on both videos. The benefits of water treadmill for conditioning to prevent injury or rehabilitation from an injury is superior

3 weeks since surgery for kimmi which ment I could take her stitches out, she helped of course 🦄. She’s sound at walk and trot (only a few steps the see). I will begin her rehab next week. She will remain confined for a couple of weeks as the surgery went all the way to the carple bone so still limited, controlled movement at the moment.

Princess Kimmi update. After stabling Kimmi for 8 days with a bandage I took her out of the stable and she was moving well enough for the paddock (1.5/5 lame at trot). I expected this after a big slip on cross country resulting in her landing from about 2m on her knee. After 48 hrs however I was rubbing some cream on the swelling and she flinched away from me, I didn’t like this response so I got the vet to X-ray. As you can see she has a small something close to the knee joint but the actual joint appeared to look great. We presumed this was some grit from a small cut that was in fact very deep caused from the landing. She went for surgery last Monday and once her knee was opened up it was discovered that her extensor tendon (at the front of knee) had not faired well. She is now happily at home being taken care of, I will take stitches out in 2 weeks and begin some light rehab on the water treadmill at 3 weeks. Prognosis is good for recovery but unknown for recovery to high level eventing. It was a big fall and all things considered I am very lucky it wasn’t worse for me and my darling Kimmi. It isn’t a nice feeling looking at your pony knowing she did nothing wrong and that there is nothing you could have done to change the outcome, unfortunately that is life and we move forward from here. Also kimmi has some paralysis in her nose from surgery which will heal but it will also take some time so, in the mean time she has a wonky nose 🦄
