Why do we number our saddle blankets at Cavalli Park?
Each horse is allocated its own numbered saddle blanket, used for every ride. This applies to our own horses and those here for training.
Our whiteboard records each horse’s blanket number, bridle, saddle and any additional gear, so everyone knows exactly which equipment to use.
The system has an important hygiene purpose. Saddle blankets collect sweat, hair and dirt, and sharing them between horses can transfer organisms associated with skin infections, including fungal conditions. Keeping blankets assigned to individual horses helps reduce that risk, alongside regular washing and thorough drying.
After exercise or washing, we also use our infrared sauna to help dry horses’ coats. Allowing the coat to dry thoroughly is another part of maintaining good skin hygiene, particularly when rugs are going back on.
The sauna supports drying, but does not replace cleaning equipment or veterinary treatment for a skin condition.
Small, consistent routines like these help us maintain a clean, organised environment and support the wellbeing of every horse in our care.
