Why Does Your Cat Knead? 🐾

Have you ever had your cat climb onto your lap, get comfortable and start rhythmically pushing their front paws in and out? We affectionately call it “making biscuits” — but have you ever wondered why they do it? 🥰

Kneading begins right back in kittenhood. Tiny kittens knead around their mother’s teats while nursing, which helps stimulate milk flow. That comforting behaviour can stay with them long after they’ve grown up.

As adults, cats may knead when they’re feeling safe, relaxed and content. That’s why you might see it just before they curl up for a nap, while they’re purring on your lap, or on their favourite soft blanket. ❤️

Cats also have scent glands in their paws, so kneading can leave some of their scent behind. And there’s another possible explanation: their wild ancestors would have pressed down vegetation to create a comfortable resting place.

You might notice your cat:
🐾 Purring while kneading
🐾 Alternating between their front paws
🐾 Kneading a favourite blanket or bed
🐾 Kneading you before settling down
🐾 Occasionally drooling when they’re really relaxed!

And yes… sometimes those claws come out too. 😂 If your cat’s little “biscuits” become painful, don’t punish them. Place a thick blanket between you and those enthusiastic paws and keep their nails regularly trimmed.

So next time your Ragdoll starts making biscuits on you, take it as a pretty lovely compliment — they’re comfortable enough to completely relax in your company. 🤍🐱

I absolutely love receiving updates from our Sarlee families and seeing how our babies are settling into their forever homes. 🥰🐾

I received this gorgeous update about Jasper
He has settled in beautifully and has grown into a very confident little boy. He gets along wonderfully with everyone in the family including all of his furry siblings. 🤍

And apparently Jasper has developed a newfound obsession with sinks! 😂😂
Because, of course, when you’re a Ragdoll, a perfectly good bed just isn’t interesting enough!

These updates really do make my day. I love watching our babies grow and seeing their personalities shine through. 🌸

🌸 WHAT IS YOUR CAT TRYING TO TELL YOU? 🐱💬

Cats have quite the vocabulary — and once you start listening, you realise not every meow is the same! 😂

A cat’s meow doesn’t have one exact translation. The sound, situation, body language and your individual cat all help tell you what they may be trying to communicate.

🐾 Short Meow — Can simply be a friendly little “hello”, acknowledgement or request for attention.

🐾 Repeated Meows — Often means they’re excited or really want your attention. Hello… I’m talking to you! 😂

🐾 Long, Drawn-Out Meow — Can be a more insistent request. Dinner late? Door closed? Something not quite to their liking? You may hear about it!

🐾 Chirps & Trills — These gorgeous little sounds are often friendly and excited. Mother cats also use trills with their kittens, and some cats use them to encourage their humans to follow them.

🐾 Soft Meow — Often a gentle request, greeting or quiet little check-in. Some cats naturally have much softer voices than others.

🐾 Low-Pitched Meow — Can signal annoyance, frustration or dissatisfaction. Basically, “Excuse me, I have a complaint.” 😂

🐾 High-Pitched Meow — Can happen with excitement, urgency, fear or discomfort. A sudden change in your cat’s normal voice or excessive vocalising is worth paying attention to.

🐾 Chattering — That funny little ek-ek-ek sound many cats make while watching birds or other prey. It’s thought to be connected with excitement and their hunting instincts.

🐾 The Silent Meow — My favourite! ❤️ Their mouth opens… but nothing comes out, or perhaps just the tiniest squeak. Often used as a gentle greeting or request for attention.

The most important thing is knowing your own cat’s normal. Over time, we learn their little sounds, expressions and routines — and somehow they become very good at training us to understand exactly what they want! 😂🐱

🌸 SPRING SAFETY – SNAKES & OUR PETS 🌸

Spring has arrived, and with the warmer weather our local snakes are becoming active again. 🐍☀️

Here in NSW, snakes such as Eastern Browns and Red-bellied Black Snakes may be on the move looking for food, warmth and mates.

For those of us with pets, this is a good time to be a little more watchful around the yard. Keep grass and overgrown areas maintained, remove places snakes may hide, and be particularly careful around sheds, wood piles, rocks and long grass.

🐾 If your dog or cat suddenly becomes weak, collapses, trembles, vomits, has difficulty breathing or simply seems very unwell after being outside, seek veterinary attention immediately. Snake bites aren’t always witnessed and bite marks can be extremely difficult to find.

And if you do see a snake, keep yourself and your pets well away and contact a licensed snake catcher if it needs to be removed. Never attempt to catch or kill it yourself.

Spring is such a beautiful time of year — just one where we need to be a little more snake wise for ourselves and our four-legged family. 🌸🐍🐾

🐱💕 CAN YOUR CAT TELL WHEN YOU’RE STRESSED?

Have you ever noticed that when you’re having a difficult day, your cat suddenly seems to know?

They may quietly appear beside you, curl up on your lap, lie against your chest or simply choose to stay close.

It can almost feel as though they’re trying to take some of that heaviness away. ❤️

While you may hear people say that cats “absorb negative energy,” there’s no scientific evidence that they literally absorb our emotions or energy.

But what cats can do is fascinating.

🐾 Cats are incredibly observant. They can notice subtle changes in our voice, movements, facial expressions, behaviour and daily routine.

👃 Their extraordinary sense of smell may also allow them to notice changes in our scent associated with different physical and emotional states.

👂 Their sensitive hearing means changes in our breathing, voice and movements don’t necessarily go unnoticed either.

💕 And because cats learn the normal behaviours of the people they live with, they can recognise when something about us is different.

So when your cat comes and settles beside you during a stressful or emotional moment, they may not understand why you’re upset — but they may recognise that something has changed.

And then something rather beautiful can happen.

The warmth of their body, their familiar presence, gentle physical contact and the sound and vibration of purring can encourage us to slow down and relax.

Our breathing may become calmer.
Our muscles may soften.
Our attention shifts away from whatever has been worrying us.

Maybe cats aren’t magically taking our stress away.

Perhaps sometimes they’re simply doing something just as special…

Sitting quietly beside the person they trust when that person needs them most. 🐱💗

And anyone who has ever been chosen as a cat’s favourite person knows just how comforting that quiet companionship can be.

Some people come home with a couple of plants in the boot.

Me? Apparently I needed the entire bloody tree. 🤣

Salesperson: “Do you think that’ll fit in your ute?”

Your Cat Doesn’t Just Recognise Your Face… 💕

Your cat knows you by much more than just what you look like.

Cats use a combination of their incredible senses to recognise the people they know and trust:

👃 Scent – Your unique smell is incredibly important to your cat and helps them identify you.

👂 Sound – Cats can learn the sound of your voice, your footsteps and even the familiar noises associated with you coming home.

👀 Sight – They can recognise familiar visual cues, although cats generally rely much more heavily on scent and sound than we do.

🐾 Routine – Cats are amazing at learning patterns. Feeding times, bedtime routines and even where you normally sit can all become part of how they know you.

Every cuddle, gentle word, meal and play session creates positive associations. Over time, your cat learns that you represent safety, comfort and security. ❤️

That special bond may be why your cat follows you around the house, greets you when you come home, sleeps beside you, head bunts you or gives you those beautiful slow blinks. 😻

They don’t just know your face.

They know your scent.
They know your voice.
They know your routine.
They know YOU. 🥹🐾
