The Stranded Marine Animal Rescue Team (S.M.A.R.T) is a non-profit company (NPC) consisting of volunteers who are passionate about marine and stranded animals along our coastlines. Our team covers the area from Wilderness

to Mossel Bay and beyond. We are dedicated to helping any animal in distress or danger and rely on the public to contact us or report any cases. S.M.A.R.T operates under the authority of the Department of, Forestry, Fisheries and Environment (DEFF) and serves as agents for Dr. Greg Hofmeyr from Bayworld, Gqerberha. We collaborate with various organisations, including the NSRI, SPCA, Mossel Bay Municipality, Seaborder Police, Cape Nature, SANParks, SAPREC and various conservancies and neighbourhood watch groups in the area. S.M.A.R.T is a non-profit company with founders Dr. Frans De Graaff(Veteranian), Anton Dellemijn, Tersia Marais and directors Ig van der Merwe and Val Marsh. Our approach to handling marine strandings, such as whales, dolphins, seals, and sea turtles, is as follows:

The public, SPCA, emergency services, SAPS, etc., report strandings to our emergency number:
072 227 4715
The message is then posted in a WhatsApp group, and available personnel are dispatched to the site. Feedback on the nature and severity of the stranding is communicated within the WhatsApp group. Animals are taken to Dr. Frans for treatment and released as soon as possible if possible. As a non-profit company (NPC), all donations are welcome to help us purchase much-needed equipment and branding materials. Our banking details are as follows:

๐ŸŽ“๐ŸŽ“SMART visits Ridgeview Primary ๐ŸŽ“๐ŸŽ“
What a joyful and meaningful morning at Ridgeview Primary in Mossel Bay. We introduced the learners to the work of the Stranded Marine Animal Rescue Team (S.M.A.R.T.) and the role they can play in protecting the ocean and its animals. Sammy the sea turtle mascot made his appearance and, of course, stole everyoneโ€™s hearts.
A big thank you to the school for the warm welcome and extra effort, and to the children who showcased their beautiful ocean awareness artwork. You are true little ocean heroes.
We appreciate every smile, question, and creative expression. Together, we are building a community that loves and protects the sea.

Wat โ€™n โ€™n Vreugdevolle en betekenisvolle oggend by Ridgeview Primary in Mosselbaai.
Julle is ware klein oseaanhelde.
Ons waardeer elke glimlag, vraag en kreatiewe uitdrukking. Saam bou ons โ€™n gemeenskap wat die see liefhet en beskerm.

SAMPLE COLLECTION of a deceased dolphin - Hersham Beach ๐Ÿฌ
๐Ÿ’ชTeamwork in Action๐Ÿ’ช
As requested by Dr. Greg of Bayworld, Val and Michelle from Stranded Marine Animal Rescue Team (S.M.A.R.T.) went down to Hersham Beach to collect samples from a dead dolphin. Seeing our struggle to turn the dolphin over, three ladies gladly stepped in to assist. ๐Ÿฌ
We are deeply thankful to Susan Maree, Heylene Maree, and Etta du Preez for their incredible support and willingness. With all the necessary PPE provided, they even stayed right through to the end assisting with writing and documenting as well. Your dedication and willingness made a difficult task possible.
Thank you so much - your help meant the world to us.๐Ÿ™

Seal RESCUE at Gate 1 โ€“ Harbour Entrance
Yesterday, the Stranded Marine Animal Rescue Team (S.M.A.R.T.) responded to a report of a Cape fur seal at Gate 1, Harbour entrance. The yearling was undernourished, and after careful assessment, the decision was made to capture and transport it to Hartenbos Animal Hospital for better care.
Thanks to the teamwork of Mario and Ursula, everything went smoothly, since it wasnโ€™t exactly the easiest place to catch him. The seal is now safely at HDH receiving the attention it needs.
Thank you also to Tersia and Louis for their support during the rescue. Together, we continue to make a difference for our marine wildlife.

Rob REDDING by Hek 1 โ€“ Hawe-ingang
Gister het die Stranded Marine Animal Rescue Team (S.M.A.R.T.) gereageer op โ€™n oproep van โ€™n Kaapse pelsrob by Hek 1, Hawe-ingang.
