Two powerhouses of production, Rachel Kane, DVM, and Alex Jayne, sit in high ranks of the 2025 United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) Hunter and Jumper Breeder standings, respectively. Together, they have a combined experience of over half a century in selecting and breeding top-quality sporthorses, well-positioning them to answer which horse qualities they breed for that are timeless, and which have evolved to elevate the next generation.

Jayne is a fifth-generation horseman and heads Our Day Farm, a highly successful hunter/jumper breeding, training, and sales business, which includes his three children, Maggie, Charlie, and Hailey, with lauded professional careers of their own. He established his breeding base for producing globally competitive jumping talent from their stock of horses.

“I was extremely lucky that I had some top international horses as my foundation mares,” says Jayne. “So, I started with all the things you look for: good brains, athleticism, great canters, nice jumping technique, and straight legs.”

Now, most of Jayne’s equine offspring are related to the horses Charlie campaigned at the highest level of show jumping; not just horses with quality bloodlines, but proven champions. “We look for longevity in the mares, because that passes on to their foals,” says Jayne.

Kane, a practicing equine veterinarian who owns Entropy Farm, a boarding, breeding, and sales barn, has a similar approach. “As an established veterinarian, I was able to get some connections through which I was able to get some really good mares, and that’s really the crux of it all,” she says. “You can really get stud samples easily these days, if you’re willing to pay, but getting the mare power and the dam lines with strong genetics is the hard part.”
