Neville came from a shaky beginning—born unwanted, uncared for, and completely unsocialized. Our staff knew he wouldn't be an easy match for the average adopter, but we chose hope.

It took a true village. For months, our volunteers poured into his social skills, helping him find canine buddies and navigating the highs and lows of shelter life. He became our longest-stay resident… until a message arrived from Massachusetts.

Diane, a incredible previous adopter who recently lost her senior rescue, reached out with a profound request: She wanted the dog who had been with us the longest.

The only hurdle? Her other shelter alum, Charlie, isn't fond of other dogs. But because Diane is a true "golden adopter," we had to try.

Our amazing volunteer and trainer, Skip, loaded Neville up for the long drive to MA. Skip even stayed for a few days to help with the acclimation period, returning home to Tennessee with a heart full of hope.

It hasn't been an overnight fairy tale. But because Diane believes in patience, decompression, and responsible pet ownership, she reminded us that perfection isn’t the goal—progress is. And progress is measured by trust, not time. There’s no magic wand, just an unwavering commitment to love.

Today, after almost three months of dedication, Diane made it official: Neville is the sweetest boy, and he is home. 🎉

Neville’s happy ending belongs to so many people. It belongs to the volunteers who sat in his kennel when he was too afraid to look at them. It belongs to the shelter staff who managed his care. It belongs to Skip, who drove him across state lines and stood by his side. And ultimately, it belongs to Diane and Charlie, who opened their hearts and their home to a dog society had written off.

We save them one pet at a time. No timelines, no shortcuts—just patience, love, and a commitment to support our dogs and our adopters every single step of the way.

Happy tails, Neville. You earned this. 🐾

🐾 We believe stronger communities create better outcomes for pets.

When we connect families with the resources and support they need, we can prevent crises before they happen and help more pets remain with the people who love them.

Every pet deserves the chance to stay with the family that loves them, and every family deserves access to the resources they need to provide that care.

As we explore future community programs, we'd love feedback from those who share our vision of helping pets and families thrive.

“The problem is not always a lack of love. Sometimes it’s a lack of access.” 🐾

Amazing partnerships brought resources to our community and we cannot be more grateful for everyone involved in this week's work.

This past week filled us with so much hope. When we are able to remove barriers and bring resources directly into our community, people show up for their animals.

While rescuing animals will always be a core part of what we do at Animal Harbor, real progress looks like prevention.

It looks like the litter of puppies or kittens that never has to enter a shelter because their parents were spayed or neutered. It looks like a pet getting preventive care before a medical crisis develops.

Over four days across Coffee and Franklin counties, the impact was life-changing:

🐾 ~200 animals received free spay/neuter and routine veterinary services.
🆔 Over 400 custom pet ID tags were made to help reynit pets with their families before they enter the shelter environment

None of this would have been possible without Underdog Pet Rescue of Wisconsin, Inc. and their mobile veterinary team! They traveled hundreds of miles from Wisconsin, loaded up their mobile clinic, and spent their entire week helping families they had never met.

Why? Because they believe, just as we do, that if we truly want to reduce suffering, we have to work together and focus on upstream solutions.

To the Underdog team, all the tireless volunteers, and everyone who supported this clinic: Thank you for believing that compassion looks like prevention. You didn't just provide medical care this week—you kept families together and countless animals from entering the shelter system.

If you are feeling generous, we would love for you to support our friends at Underdog. Every dollar makes a difference. We want nothing more than for them to be able to visit our community again in the future, but they can't do it without support. ❤️🐾

🐾 RESCUING MAGNUM: PART TWO 🐾

Eight years ago, a beautiful Beagle named Magnum came into our lives under the most heartbreaking circumstances—he had been critically shot. The incredible team at Town and Country Veterinary Hospital and Animal Harbor jumped into action immediately, fought for his life, and won. Shortly after, Magnum found what we all hoped was his forever home.

It sounds like the perfect fairytale ending, right?
Sadly, life threw Magnum a curveball. Recently, he was surrendered to Animal Control. Fortunately, they knew his history, checked for his microchip, and contacted us immediately so we could bring this special boy back into our care.

🌟 Meet Magnum Today 🌟

Magnum is now a distinguished senior guy at 9 years young. Despite everything he has been through, his spirit isn't broken. In fact, he is:

The Ultimate Cuddle Bug: If you are sitting down, he wants to be right next to you (or on you!).

A Total People-Pleaser: He absolutely adores humans and has the absolute funniest, most charming personality.

Ready for his Golden Years: He’s past the chaotic puppy phase and is ready for the good life.

🏡 What Magnum is Looking For:

Because Magnum prefers to keep all the human love to himself, he needs to be the only dog in the home. He’s made it clear that he doesn’t enjoy the company of other canine friends, and we want to set him up for absolute success.

Magnum has already beaten the odds once. Now, he just needs a quiet, loving place to spend his golden years. If your heart feels compelled to rescue this resilient boy for the second time, please don't wait.

We believe adolescent humane education is so important in our area, and have been thrilled to get back into the classrooms.

Please connect with our friends at CASA PAWS and ask about their easy to implement materials that will get your animal organization into the classrooms effortlessly.

One thing we have learned is this - it's going to take more than just CASA PAWS to educate an entire generation of new pet owners!

Emily Holland, Executive Director from Animal Harbor is an example of someone who saw the need, reached out, and is now running with her own education program in Wi******er, TN.

This is part one of a discussion we had with Emily. Please read!

CASA PAWS: Hi Emily! Tell us why you decided to start teaching responsible pet ownership in schools?

Emily: As Executive Director, I’m constantly thinking long term, evaluating impact, and asking hard questions about where we need to grow or pivot in order to best serve our mission. One thing I regularly do is step back and honestly assess whether we are fully living out every part of that mission.

Animal Harbor’s mission includes promoting animal welfare, and in 2024, I spent time seriously reflecting on what that really looked like in practice. We had invested energy into outreach efforts and adult education, and while we saw some success there, it became clear during that reevaluation that adolescent education and getting back into the schools was essential.

In rescue work, it’s easy to become fully consumed by responding to crisis after crisis, the emergencies, the overcrowding, the medical needs, the daily urgency of sheltering. But if we truly want long-term change for animals, we have to invest in prevention and education too.

Children are naturally compassionate, curious, and deeply connected to animals. Humane education gives us an opportunity to help shape empathy, responsibility, kindness, and safe pet ownership early on, before harmful cycles become normalized.
For us, this program became about much more than teaching children how to care for pets. It became about building a more compassionate community overall.

And honestly, from a capacity standpoint, we also recognized that shelters cannot rescue their way out of every issue alone. Education has to be part of the solution. If we want to reduce neglect, improve animal welfare, strengthen the human-animal bond, and create lasting cultural change, that work has to begin early and consistently within the community.

CASA PAWS: Thank you Emily for that thoughtful response. Executive Directors sure have a lot to consider as they manage the day-to-day while also steering their organization for the long haul. We'll be back next week with more insights from our interview with Emily Holland, Executive Director at Animal Harbor!

It’s Official: The Bets Are Settled! 🐾❤️

Remember when we asked you to place your bets on a certain "foster fail"? Well, the votes are in, and absolutely nobody is surprised! 😉😜

Emily and Kenneth officially made it permanent today: Dulce and Angelina are home for good!

When these two sweet girls first arrived, they came from a heartbreaking hoarding situation where they were crammed into a single home with 40 other dogs. They didn't know what a quiet space, a soft bed, or undivided love even felt like.

What started as a safe place for them to decompress and heal quickly turned into morning cuddles, shared routines, and a bond that couldn't be broken. It turns out the best kind of foster fail is the one where everyone wins.

Please join us in celebrating Dulce and Angelina's incredible journey to the pampered life they always deserved! Welcome home, girls. 🥰

175+ families. 1,000+ pets. 26 pallets of supplies. 239 custom I.D. tags. 1 incredible community coming together for GOOD.

Saturday’s Pet Food & Supply Giveaway was a massive success! This incredible event was spearheaded and organized by our amazing friends at Underdog Pet Rescue, with Animal Harbor honored to serve as the host site.

We didn't expect a 1.5-mile line of cars for four hours straight, but the team and community rose to the occasion! Because of this effort, over 1,000 pets left with food, brand-new custom ID tags, collars, and leashes.

The 20+ volunteers from the community and neighboring rescues are the absolute heroes of the day—unloading 26 pallets by hand and serving with smiles through both heat and pouring rain. 🌧️☀️

Our deepest gratitude to:

🤝 Underdog Pet Rescue of Wisconsin, Inc. for bringing this vital event and resources to our community

📦 Greater Good Charities & Chewy for making this supply influx possible

🚓 Decherd Police Department for expertly directing four hours of heavy traffic

🐾 Our Rescue Friends: Redemption Underdog Freedom Fund, Coffee County Humane Society, and Manchester City Animal Control for the vital volunteer power and connecting pet owners to future resources.

Our hearts are completely full. Thank you for letting us host such an impactful day!

⚠️ A Note from Our Team: This event was run entirely by exhausted, unpaid volunteers who gave their physical and mental energy in the heat and rain to help our neighbors. We are incredibly proud of them. Because of this, we have a zero-tolerance policy for negativity, entitlement, or hateful comments on this post. Any unkind remarks will be deleted immediately, and users will be blocked. Let’s keep this space focused on the gratitude our volunteers deserve. Thank you!
