Hey everyone, Josh here!

I wanted to share a quick update on some exciting things happening here at The Bio Dude!

One of my biggest goals heading into the end of this year and into 2027 is to get back to creating more YouTube content. Between running the business, managing day-to-day operations, and everything else that comes with it, finding the time to make videos has definitely been a challenge. However, with our marketing team growing, I'm excited to get back to producing more of the educational content, animal care videos, and habitat builds that so many of you have been asking for!

Speaking of which, I have a new Hognose habitat build video coming soon!

I also have a small favor to ask! We are SO CLOSE to hitting 100,000 subscribers on YouTube. That's a milestone I've wanted to reach for a long time, and it would mean the world to me if we could get there before the end of the year.

If you haven't subscribed yet, or know someone who loves reptiles, amphibians, bioactive habitats, or just learning about nature, I'd really appreciate you checking out the channel or sharing it with a friend!

This milestone would be especially meaningful because we're also approaching The Bio Dude's 10-year anniversary! It's hard to believe how far we've come, and I have all of you to thank for helping make that possible.

We've got some fun things planned to celebrate, including special sales for Halloween, Black Friday/Cyber Monday, and our BIG 10-year anniversary sale.

On a more personal note, I know things aren't easy for a lot of people right now. The cost of everyday living continues to put pressure on families and small businesses alike, and I don't take your support for granted. Whether you've placed an order, visited our store, watched a video, shared a post, or simply recommended us to a friend, every bit of that support makes a difference and means everything to me.

Much love from Texas! ❤️

Talk about leveling up your leopard gecko! 🦎 This week’s , shared by Jay, features a 40-gallon bioactive terrarium with a dynamic hardscape and plenty of opportunities zones.
One of the standout features of this build is the variety in elevation. Creating different levels gives reptiles more choices when navigating their environment, including access to different temperatures and light exposure levels. Jay incorporated ledges into the 3D background, then used rocks, cork tubes, cork flats, and branches to create connected pathways throughout the enclosure.
Natural density in this build is further enhanced by the choice of plants. Jay used several succulents, including different jade varieties like ‘Shrek’s Ears,’ along with string of pearls, Echeveria, and aloe. Together, these plants provide a nice variety of shapes and growth habits, with upright foliage, low-growing rosettes, and trailing vines helping fill different areas of the habitat.

Snuggling up in the slate 🪨
We often use flagstone slate rocks in habitats to create caves and crevices. Their broad, flat shape makes them especially useful for stacking and creating tight spaces that many reptiles naturally seek out for security.
Flagstone is also great for building basking areas. Slate retains heat well, helping create warm surfaces and add different thermoregulation zones throughout the habitat. As an added bioactive bonus, it gradually contributes minerals back into the substrate, benefiting the ecosystem and its clean-up crew.
Just remember to keep your rockwork secure! Heavy rocks should be supported so digging or burrowing underneath them can’t cause the structure to shift or collapse. For rocks that aren't wedged or secured by gravity alone, we recommend using Terrarium Glue to adhere them to eachother.

In this , the plants are really popping! 🌿
Shared by Cyp, this tiger salamander enclosure features dense foliage, deep substrate, and a dedicated water area.
One feature that really stands out is the deep layer of soil! Tiger salamanders are members of the mole salamander family and spend much of their time underground in the wild. The deep soil helps support this natural burrowing behavior.
The build also features a variety of plants that provide plenty of ground-level cover, including pilea, coleus, and pothos. Their dense growth creates shaded, sheltered areas throughout the habitat, which suits the secretive nature of these salamanders.
While adult tiger salamanders are primarily terrestrial and don't require a large aquatic area, having the option to have a little soak is appreciated.

Caught in the act...of displaying natural behaviors! 🌿
A walk around the store this week resulted in witnessing some fun animal behaviors, including:
🟢 A Western hognose snake with dirt on her face. These snakes are active burrowers, using their upturned, shovel-like snouts to push through and dig into substrate.
🟢 A leopard gecko eating his shed. Many geckos and other lizards consume their shed skin, a natural behavior that may help recover some of the nutrients contained in it. Yum!
🟢 A Cuban false chameleon displaying its dewlap. Dewlap displays are a form of visual communication and can be used in social interactions such as courtship and territorial displays.
🟢 A Giant Desert Hairy Scorpion fluorescing under UV light. Like many scorpions, compounds in its exoskeleton absorb ultraviolet light and re-emit it at longer wavelengths, producing that characteristic glow.
