Swipe to the last picture for puppy cuteness overload!

Saying that I found my calling would be an understatement.
One thing I love about being a dog trainer is that my work and life never gets boring…
I spent the past 10 days in Central and Southern California soaking in all that it has to offer (including sessions with a very very special little springer spaniel called Ladybird 🤭)

I’m a big believer in practicing what you preach - even if it feels hard - and for me that looked like mostly unplugging from my work and social media to be present for all the special moments whether it was in the water 🏄🏼‍♀️ or on land.

Inspired and excited to seeing my east coast clients soon 🧡

Want to help your reactive dog? First, you have to figure out the WHY.

Because if you don’t know what’s causing the problem, how can you know what kind of training program will actually help?

When I work with a new client I never give advice until I have the full picture. (This is why I ask a ton of questions during our first call, intake form and first session!)

- when it comes to dog behavior, I only throw spaghetti at the wall if I KNOW they’ll stick 🙃

Reactivity in particular is a behavior that looks similar but can have many underlying root causes.

Knowing which one (or which combination of factors) it is crucial if you want to see real lasting change.

I took this video of one of my clients formerly reactive dogs in the middle of the park while we practiced calm behavior with dogs walking by. So proud of their progress ✨

… and it’s the hard things that are meaningful and worthwhile in life.

I know this might be a controversial topic because - I get it we are all crazy busy and simply don’t have a ton of time for our dogs - so let me make one thing clear:

There is nothing wrong with finding help for your dog, like hiring a dog sitter or buying new toys because your dog likes them (it can be very helpful!)

The point I’m making is that the bond you create with your dog is unique and the time you spend is special and can’t be replaced 🤍 And at the end of the day the time spend, the bond built and the special memories created are what makes a dog‘s life special.

This is an example of typical territorial/alert barking of my 2 y.o. intact male Australian Shepherd.

Barking can be annoying but also helpful - dogs have super sensitive senses and are great alarm systems.

📣Barking usually becomes a problem (mainly for human neighbors) when it doesn’t stop or if we don’t have an „off-button“.

My personal approach for this kind of barking is communicating the following to my dog „thank you very much, I heard it, and you can stop now and return to base“.
I did that through clear communication using only a harness, a long line and rewards in the beginning.

Any breed that was genetically selected for some sort of guardian function tends to bark and guard more naturally. It’s our job as guardians to communicate clearly what we want and to tell them when barking is enough.

(this video is without cuts only zooms for better view of body language)

Do you have a territorial barker at home? What’s your approach?

*and by “perfect” I mean a dog that is robot-level of obedient and scared to show their real personality.

No dog is perfect and we aren’t either.

The deeper I dive into understanding dog and human behavior the more I strive for connection rather than perfection 🤍

The real flex is a dog that feels connected to you and trusts you so reliability and calm behavior are a logical result 🤌

Raise your hands if you experienced any of these feelings - because we have (yup even as professional dog trainers!)

If you have ever froze when your dog gets reactive, walk back home embarrassed and defeated, replay your walks and your dog reactions and get into rabbit holes online - well, we might have the perfect kind of support for you ☺️

Next week we - Laura from Curious Snoots | Dog Training + Walking and Bianca from Bianca | Dog Behavior Consultant for high-drive breeds are teaming up for a workshop that is not about dog training but about YOU - the human at the end of the leash.

My personal edition of enjoying the summer in a Kinda Chic way 🍒☀️

These past few weeks have been filled with finishing up some 1-2-1 programs with existing clients, starting up with amazing new dogs & humans, collaborating with other trainers, prepping some new projects for the fall and trying to take some more time for myself and enjoying the summer (first season since Dogfulness to take full weekends off - entrepreneurship is no joke lol!)

One of my favorite things about having a dog is including them in new activities - last weekend was his very first time of kayaking!
Should I share some pictures?
