We had a well attended and wonderful client education event earlier this week! 📝

A huge thank you to Dr. Phil with Merck Animal Health Equine for his engaging presentation on colic and field emergencies. And to High Horses Center for Equine-Assisted Services for setting up such a beautiful space and hosting us all!

Added bonus - Dr.Sam and Dr.Glass didn’t even get any emergency colic calls during the event! 😜

🐴 Thank you to all who attended! 🐴

‼️Cool (gross!) Case Alert! ‼️

This poor horse presented with a swollen face and difficulty eating a few weeks ago (photo 1).

After taking a closer look, we discovered that she had a big abscess in her upper lip! We simultaneously discovered a new breed of horse: the thoroughbeaver 🦫!!

A big wood splinter (from chewing the fence) made its way into the mucosa of her lip and an abscess formed around it.

Dr. Sam was able to pop the abscess and thoroughly debride the area. It was so big that after cleaning out all the pus and wood remnants, there was a huge hole all the way through her lip! 🤕 (Photos 2-4)

After a couple weeks of antibiotics, flushing, pain meds, and TLC from her owner, she is as good as new! (Photos 5-6)

Just in time for spring grazing! 🌷🐴

🚨No emergency coverage March 6-7th 🚨

Both Citadel Equine and FEC are not available. This means, during these dates, there will be no veterinarians available for any on-farm emergency services for current clients. In the unlikely event your horse needs emergency treatment, you will need to be prepared to go to a referral hospital.

🛻 Please have your trailers plowed out‼️
Don’t have a truck/trailer? Make a plan with a friend who does.

☎️ Who do you call? A referral hospital of your choosing. You MUST call the hospital first, DO NOT just show up. We often refer to Tufts Hospital for Large Animals, but a complete list of options are below:

🐎 Tufts (MA) 508-839-7926
🐎 Myhre (NH) 603-335-4777
🐎 NEEMSC (NH) 603-749-9111
🐎 Rood & Riddle (NY) 518-583-7273

Seems like the right time to remind everyone of some VERY important cold weather tips 🥶🐴

Those sub-zero temps are rolling in! Tips for cold weather horse care 👇

❄️ FEED EXTRA FOOD
During extreme cold the most important thing to do is feed extra forage (hay). Horses keep warm by digesting food.

❄️ EXTRA NON-FROZEN WATER
When horses eat more forage they HAVE to drink more water or we can end up with impactions. Pretty simple. Feed warm, wet mashes, feed salt/electrolytes. Trick them into consuming extra water.

❄️ ACCESS TO SHELTER
Horses need to safely be able to get out of the wind. Access to barn/stalls/shelter and maybe blankets is necessary in extreme cold.

❄️NORMAL ROUTINES
Horses love their routines. Although extreme cold will require us to make some changes, it is very important to keep their schedule and routine as normal as possible. Now is not the time to make any drastic changes.

And remember, the horses don’t care how clean the barn is this weekend. You can’t freeze, because you have to feed them! 😉

⭐️ Fun Gastroscope before and after ⭐️

🐴 Photo 1: This horse was diagnosed with grade 4 squamous ulcers.
Ulcers are graded 1-4. Grade 1 are mild areas of irritation to the stomach mucosa and grade 4 are extensive, deep ulcerations that are often bloody (as seen here).

🐴 Photo 2: This is the exact same place in the stomach and it’s what a stomach should look like. Upon completion of an appropriate month-long treatment regime, this horse now has no ulcers‼️‼️ Grade 4 to zero. Gone.

Symptoms vary greatly in horses and they never present quite in the same manner. Scoping is the ONLY way to diagnose gastric ulcers and know for sure you are spending your money treating something that needs to be treated‼️

Don’t want your horse to fast out in the cold this winter? ❄️ Bring them over and they can fast in the heated clinic (photo 3)… we will even give them a buddy! 🐴

💵 Stay tuned for some Gastroscope saving opportunities after the first of the year 💵
