🚨 We need your help — TODAY 🚨

Our spay/neuter assistance program is 100% volunteer-run, and right now we’re operating month to month. Funding is critically low. If it doesn’t turn around soon, we may have to shut off our phones, which means fewer cats and dogs get fixed, and more litters end up in our community.

We keep overhead as low as possible (our only real cost is printing our newsletter a few times a year), so every dollar you give goes straight to helping animals get spayed and neutered. 🐾

🐾 Happy International Cat Day! 🐾

Today we’re celebrating every whiskered, purring member of the family and reminding cat lovers why spaying and neutering matters so much.

One unaltered female cat and her offspring can lead to hundreds of kittens in just a few years. Spaying and neutering isn’t only about population control. It also helps prevent certain cancers and infections, reduces roaming and fighting, and means a calmer, happier life for your cat.

🤩Absolutely incredible work by Animal Balance and our very own Mendocino County Animal Care Services!!!

🎉 627 Community Animals Spayed & Neutered! 🐾

We are proud to announce that, following the completion of our final 2026 Animal Balance clinic, 627 community animals have now been spayed and neutered in the last six months!

With a critical shortage of veterinarians in Mendocino County and the surrounding areas, this is a truly monumental achievement. It would not have been possible without the incredible organizations, partners, and volunteers who dedicated their time, resources, and hard work to making each clinic a success.

A heartfelt thank you to Animal Balance, Dogwood Animal Rescue, Perkins Family Law, and the Margery Pfund Spay and Neuter Donation for their invaluable support in funding, organizing, and helping bring these MASH-style clinics to Ukiah.

We would also like to recognize the Humane Society for Inland Mendocino County, which closed its facility during each clinic weekend so its staff could spend the entire day supporting these events. Their generosity and commitment made an enormous impact.

Finally, we want to express our sincere gratitude to our own shelter volunteers. They showed up weekend after weekend, putting in long hours of physically demanding work in the summer heat—all with smiles on their faces and a shared commitment to helping the animals in our community. These clinics simply would not have been possible without your dedication.

While there are no additional Animal Balance clinics scheduled for the remainder of 2026, plans are already underway to continue these collaborative efforts, and we look forward to bringing more life-changing clinics to Mendocino County in the future.

Thank you Mendocino CART for showing up for the animals and their people during last night’s scary Feliz fire. We are so thankful the fire’s progress has been stopped and grateful to all the first responders who helped get it under control. Look at Becca Edwards helping set up after a long day at the Animal Balance spay/neuter event! 💪 As Mr. Rogers used to say, “Look for the helpers.”

This is part of the sad reality for feral cats in our communities. These animals are highly vulnerable and often suffer greatly. Want to be part of the solution? Spay and neuter your local cat colonies! SNAP certificates can be used to TNR, whether you are taking a couple strays in to your local vet, or hauling a van load of 30 up to Humboldt (you know who you are 😉)! Together, we can make a difference.

There are so many reasons why it’s important to spay and neuter your pets! Thankfully this poor kitty received the care she needed, but this could have had a sad outcome. Please remember to spay and neuter!

Spaying goes further than population decrease, it also is a great preventative to avoid severe health issues down the road!

This community cat was brought in with severely swollen mammary glands due to her having a condition called Feline Juvenile Mammary Hypertrophy. FJMH is something that can occur in sexually intact cats that causes enlargement of the mammary glands that can result in ulceration of the glands, skin necrosis, and trauma.
The best preventative and treatment is to spay/neuter cats to avoid any risk of them producing hormones that will cause the Mammary Hypertrophy.

This cat also was suffering from a pyometra, an infection of the uterus that turns deadly quick! The timing of her spay could not have come at a better time! The infected uterus was removed, and she was given a long lasting antibiotic injection.

Spaying/neutering has a variety of benefits that include a pets overall health, behavioral issues, and (for us owners) financial struggles brought on by emergencies!

Our spay/neuter program is aimed to be as low cost as we can make it, and we also provide financial assistance for limited income households.
