A story from an open home ❤️

A sweet little girl walked through our doors quiet, scared, and unsure. Her eyes told a story no child should have to carry. She had walked a hard road filled with abuse and neglect. Every movement was cautious, every word careful, as if she was waiting for the moment she might do something wrong and get in trouble.

We gently told her she was safe here. That she didn’t have to be afraid anymore.

But words can only go so far when a child has been hurt. She needed to see it. She needed to feel it.

Little by little, her guard started to come down. She began to believe that maybe, just maybe, this house was different. That the people here truly wanted nothing more than to love her.

We asked her what she liked. After a moment, she shyly told us she loved Hello Kitty… and anything pink.

Not long before, some amazing ladies from a local quilters group had made a special Hello Kitty “Love Bug.” When we gave it to her, her face lit up in a way we hadn’t seen before.

Then she told us the only other thing she really wanted was a pink fuzzy blanket.

We didn’t have one at the house, so one of our volunteers headed to the store to buy it. As she walked down the aisle, she couldn’t believe her eyes.

There it was….

A pink fuzzy Hello Kitty blanket.

When the volunteer brought it back and placed it in her hands, our sweet girl had tears in her eyes. She hugged that blanket like it was the most precious thing in the world.

To some, it’s just a blanket.
But to her, it meant she was seen.
She was loved.
She mattered.

And to us, it was another reminder that our God never stops showing up for His children. He hasn’t forgotten them, not for a moment.

He cares about every single detail…

Even pink fuzzy Hello Kitty blankets

You bet we vaccinate.

In today's Q&A, something that should not be a controversy.

We follow veterinary protocol (American Association of Equine Practitioners) core vaccination recommendations for each horse we intake.

What are core vaccinations in a horse? In short, the deadly diseases that can be easily prevented or substantially reduced in severity by vaccinating the horse.

These include:
🔹 Tetanus, found in the soil, 70% fatal and incredibly expensive to treat
🔹 Eastern and western Encephalomyelitis, considered 90+% fatal, carried by mosquitoes
🔹 Rabies, transmitted by infected mammals, 100% fatal and transmissible to humans and other animals
🔹 West Nile Virus, transmitted by mosquitoes, can be fatal or, in horses that survive, may cause lifelong health and soundness impacts
🔹 Flu and rhino, respiratory illnesses spread horse to horse, considered a core vaccine anywhere horses are boarded, showing, or off-site trail riding (IE, contact with 'outside' or 'new' horses or shared stalls with unknown horses)
🔹 Strangles, can be fatal and expensive to treat, as above with flu/rhino

Other vaccines are considered on a case by case basis, under advisement of veterinarians, and given based on the horse's risk. For instance, Botulism is nearly always fatal but only horses in certain circumstances may be exposed to it. Potomac Horse Fever wasn't present in our area until a few years ago; now, more owners are vaccinating for it if their horses live a lifestyle where they may be exposed to it.

Our horses are sent home with their adopters with their health records, including vaccination and deworming schedule and current, negative Coggins.
