THE ANSWER: This blood sample is LIPEMIC!

If you guessed lipemia, you got it!

That cloudy, creamy appearance is caused by a high concentration of lipids (fats) in the bloodstream.

One of the most common reasons we see a lipemic sample? The pet recently ate! After a meal—especially a fatty one—triglyceride-rich particles circulate through the bloodstream and can give the sample this characteristic appearance.

Lipemia can also be associated with certain medical conditions, particularly when it persists despite appropriate fasting.

Why does it matter?
Significant lipemia can interfere with some laboratory tests and potentially affect the accuracy of certain bloodwork results. Depending on the situation, your veterinary team may recommend repeating the sample after fasting or investigating further.

Pretty amazing how much information a little tube of blood can give us!

Veterinary Mystery Time!

This is a real, un-spun blood sample from one of our patients.

What do you think caused it to separate like this? 👀

No cheating! Drop your best guess below, and we'll post the answer tomorrow along with what it can tell us about a patient's health.

Monsoons are here! Beware of Bufo (Sonoran Desert) Toads!

Monsoon season brings more than just rain—it also brings Sonoran Desert (Bufo) toads, and they can be extremely dangerous to dogs.

These toads secrete a powerful toxin from glands behind their eyes. Curious pets can be exposed simply by licking, mouthing, or picking up a toad. Symptoms can begin within minutes.

Signs of Bufo toad poisoning include:
• Excessive drooling or foaming at the mouth
• Bright red gums
• Pawing at the mouth
• Vomiting
• Disorientation or stumbling
• Tremors or seizures
• Difficulty breathing
• Collapse

If your pet has contact with a Bufo toad:
✅ Immediately rinse the mouth with a gentle stream of water, directing the water from the back of the mouth toward the front so your pet doesn't swallow more toxin.
✅ Wipe away saliva if possible.
✅ Seek emergency veterinary care immediately. Time is critical.

Prevention Tips:
• Supervise pets outdoors, especially after sunset and after rain.
• Remove standing water where toads may gather.
• Check outdoor water bowls and pools.
• Teach dogs a reliable "leave it" command.

At Phoenix Mobile Veterinarians, our goal is to help you prevent emergencies before they happen. If you have questions about Bufo toads or think your pet has been exposed, don't wait—call us right away.

Because here in Arizona, monsoon season should bring rain—not a trip to the emergency room.

Drum roll please..... The Results Are In!

How many puppies did you count? 👀

The correct answer is... FOUR PUPPIES!

Did you get it right? Let us know in the comments! 👇

Counting puppies on an X-ray can be trickier than it looks! Our veterinarians use radiographs late in pregnancy to help estimate litter size and prepare owners for delivery—but even then, Mother Nature can sometimes keep us guessing.

Thanks to everyone who played along! Stay tuned for more fun veterinary challenges, educational posts, and behind-the-scenes moments from Phoenix Mobile Veterinarians.
